Help Give Quintana a Facelift for Spring

Join us Sunday, March 16, 2014 from 2:00 to 5:00pm to help get the Quintana Bird Sanctuaries ready for spring migration. We will clear the trails, trim trees, clear brush and do whatever else needs to be done to get the sanctuary ready for the birds and birders that will descend in April and May. We will also be looking for early migrants of course! Please contact Tom Taroni for more information. Bring gloves, clippers, and your binoculars!

Birdies for the Birds

On Monday March 24, 2014, GCBO will host our second Birdies for the Birds golf tournament at The Wilderness in Lake Jackson, TX. This tournament is a four person scramble with check-in at 11:30 and tee time at 12:30. We are currently looking for sponsors and players. For only $150 your business or organization can be a hole sponsor where your information will be prominently displayed at a hole of your choice. Sponsorship and registration information is available on our website. All proceeds will go directly to our bird conservation programs including Summer Bird Camp, Spring Fling and recovery of the endangered Whooping Crane. We need some help identifying new players so if you are a golfer, consider asking your friends to join you in a fun day of golf that supports our birds. We anticipiate this being a great fundraiser for GCBO, but we can't do it without your help!Contact Carol for more information.

First Annual Raptor Rodeo Wraps Up

Our first annual Raptor Rodeo came to an end on January 31st. Three teams competed from completely different parts of the state. The winning team was the Raptor Wranglers consisting of Andy Dietrich (shown above) and Bill Baker. They spotted 348 raptors of 9 species on January 17th and received The Arvin Award for their efforts. All proceeds from this event will go towards funding the Smith Point Hawk Watch in 2014 and we greatly appreciate the support from all the teams. Look for some exciting changes in this event for next year!

 Beginning to Take Flight

Can you believe the progress that has been made on the construction of our new Avian Conservation Science Center? The foundation is in place, base flooring is down, many walls are up, and the main roof support beams are in place. Our contractors expect to have the roof completed and all rooms enclosed by February 14th. Won't that be sweet :-)! We are certainly looking forward to an early summer Grand Opening. This has been a long journey - 10 years in the making. We greatly appreciate you making our dream a reality! While the contractors work away, we continue to chip away at raising the final dollars for a May 25th completion date. With your help we have raised $832,219. The total cost is $995,000, so we still have $162,000 to raise. If you would like to make your own contribution to the building, click HERE to find a contribution category to fit your budget.

TOS Spring Meeting Coming to Lake Jackson

This year the spring TOS meeting will be in Lake Jackson on April 24-26, 2014. The last weekend in April is sure to bring lots of great birds since it is the peak of spring migration. We are planning many field trips to locations normally closed to the public so be sure to register early. The Cherotel will be the host facility and the room block is already set up. They can be reached at 1-800-544-2119. A full program will be available in early spring in the TOS Bulletin and on line at the GCBO and TOS websites. If you have additional questions now, please call GCBO at 979-480-0999 and ask for Carol. In the meantime, block these dates on your calendar!

Monthly Bird Banding at GCBO

It's February and winter has settled in on us. Our winter residents are here in full force and we are sure to catch many of them. Come join us from 8:00 til noon on Saturday, February 15th for our monthly bird banding session and see what turns up in the nets. Remember birds wake up at dawn so your best chance to see the most birds is early. Seeing birds in the hand is a great way to get kids excited about wildlife, but all ages are welcome. See the map on our webpage for directions or find a map by going to Mapquest or GoogleMaps.  Note that some other navigators will not take you to the correct location.

Photo of the Month

This month's photo of the month comes from volunteer Mike Gray. The Wood Duck's have returned to the GCBO wetland and there is nesting material in the nest box. Can you say baby Wood Ducks?!

Bird Tip of the Month: Burr...it's still cold out - most days anyway - so remember to put out suet cakes for the woodpeckers and wintering warblers. Also because food sources are scarcer in winter, more birds may be attracted to backyard feeders and those feeders will need to be cleaned with some hot water and dried a few times during the season.

Our Vision is a healthy ecosystem with abundant space for birds to survive and thrive around the Gulf of Mexico.
