TUTS’ holiday MYA production of Scrooge reached close to 4,000 students last week. For most of these students, this was their first time experiencing musical theatre. PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of the many generous MYA sponsors, offered a free Financial Literacy session after performances to the attending schools.

The River Performing and Visual Arts Center, provides an accessible, affordable, fine arts education for individuals with disabilities and their siblings.

Want to Volunteer?

The River is made possible by the hard work and dedication of a large group of volunteers. Our volunteers are responsible for keeping students safe, assisting teaching artists and teacher aides with classroom set up and management, and most importantly helping to encourage River students achieve their creative ideas and goals.

This fall The River had 44 volunteers donate over 600 hours to the Saturday morning program. Each Saturday up to 30 volunteers were a part of helping our students develop their self-esteem and confidence in a very positive and inclusive environment. We are so grateful for their help!

If you are interested in joining our team of volunteers please take a moment to visit our website to find out about the application process and requirements. Spring applications are now available!

Through Classes in the Community The River served a total of 1,296 students during the 2012-13 school year.

The River believes that every child should have the opportunity to experience the arts. Visit our website to find out how you can bring adaptive arts to your school.

Theatre Under The Stars' educational vision is to provide accessible and inclusive musical theatre education for children and adults of all abilities. Through our Classes in the Community programs, we are able to conduct classes throughout the Houston metropolitan area in schools, community centers and hospitals. Our education and community engagement program reaches over 45,000 children and adults annually.

Here is a look at the incredible influence these programs are having in the community:

Math In Musical Melodies Workshop

TUTS recently visited South Houston High School and taught a “Math in Musical Melodies” Workshop to 560 Geometry students. Using the assigned geometric equation and music genre, each group was challenged to create a “jingle” that would explain their equation. This program was such a unique way to tie the arts into math and allow students the opportunity to think outside the box.

School Based Programs

This semester, TUTS has been working with Ridgecrest and Golfcrest Elementary schools teaching musical theatre classes to “All Shook Up!”. A curriculum is created based on a Broadway musical that in turn helps the children learn the three disciplines of acting, singing and dancing. It is our goal that these programs teach teamwork, self-confidence, discipline, and pride in creating a finished product for friends and family to enjoy.

Productions are in full swing! Here is a look at upcoming & recent participating schools:
