Tricks AND Treats at IEAS!
International Exotic Animal Sanctuary News

October 2013 Newsletter
International Exotic Animal Sanctuary News

October snuck up on us here at IEAS! We can’t believe how fast time is going, but it seems to have flown by these past few months. That’s bound to happen when you’re as busy as we’ve been at the Sanctuary! Even still, we’re prepared with lots of tricks AND treats to make October a GREAT month at IEAS!

The last month has been full of changes. The eleven new “Cherokee” bears from the bear pits of North Carolina have settled in happily into their new home. It seems they have each fully embraced IEAS and have their own favorite parts of living here. Spearmint, for example, seems to most enjoy the new found opportunity for privacy. As a bear who was constantly forced to be in the public eye, Spearmint can now come out to say "hello" when he chooses and lounge on the soft ground under the trees if he's feeling like some peace and quiet! We love spending time with this big bear, and it makes us even happier to know that it is on HIS terms! The cubs (Odin,Saber, and Chewy) are growing up fast - faster than we can blink really! Each of them matures more and more every day, and they have all officially moved into their permanent habitats. They're still wonderfully playful, and we love the opportunity to watch them enjoying their forever home. Additionally, with the help of the Emotional Enrichment Program, their confidence is increasing each and every day! We’ve also welcomed a new group of interns to IEAS, and they’ve jumped right into our routines. They’ve even begun working on independent projects, such as building ramps for some of the Sanctuary residents and making fire hose balls for several of the most playful IEAS animals. They’ve been doing a great job so far, and we can’t wait to see them continue to improve as the session continues!

When fall hits, we are always so excited for the prospect of seasonal enrichment. This year, we didn’t have to do much waiting for the annual supply of pumpkins to begin to arrive! We got a load of over 100 pumpkins from some awesome folks at Rainbow Plant Sales in Saginaw, TX. With 28 bears who LOVE to eat these yummy treats, and 43 felines who loves to tear them up, this stock won’t last long! We would love to receive even more of these pumpkins to give out to the animals. If you would like to donate a pumpkin to IEAS, just drop it off at our front office located on Highway 114 in Boyd, TX!

Male White-nosed Coatimundi
Born: October 8, 2003
Rescued: April 27, 2012

Mork is as curious as they come – very true to his coati nature! He loves to sniff new smells, but it does take some time to gain this little guy’s trust. His favorite thing to do is lounge with his pal, Mindy, on their high perch.
Male Bobcat
Born: October 30, 1996
Rescued: January 18, 1999

Pecos is one of the most private residents of IEAS. He likes to keep to himself, and is most content when he is lounging undisturbed in his house or cave. We give him all the space he wants, but we are sure to come over with his favorite treat – chicken!
Male White Bengal Tiger
Born: October 31, 2005
Rescued: March 28, 2011

Titan is such a handsome tiger, and a sweet one at that! After such a tough beginning, Titan has truly flourished at the Sanctuary, and has become so affectionate with those he trusts most. We are always so happy to receive a chuff from this guy!
