San Antonio Will Compete for Major National Events
The enhanced opportunity for success is the primary outcome of working together as a team. Over the past six months, leadership from the Valero Alamo Bowl, UTSA, the City of San Antonio and San Antonio Sports have worked together to strengthen San Antonio's chances to attract major national events. That team of people reviewed feedback provided by the NCAA after the unsuccessful Men's Final Four bid in 2008 and analyzed a third-party study that provided suggested improvements to the Alamodome to help make the facility more competitive for future bids. After building consensus and prioritizing the recommendations, the City of San Antonio recently approved a resolution that would provide upgrades to the Alamodome to host future College Football Championship and NCAA Men's Final Four events.

The new four-team college football playoff system starts next season. The semifinal games will still be played at traditional bowl sites, but any city can bid to host the new championship game. Last week, the Valero Alamo Bowl and the City of San Antonio submitted a bid, and the commissioners of the 10 major conferences and Notre Dame are expected to pick the host sites by Nov. 11. The economic impact of the College Football Championship Game to the host city is estimated at $200 million. Over the next six weeks, San Antonio Sports, UTSA and the City of San Antonio will be working diligently on a bid to host the Men's Final Four during the 2017-2020 cycle. More than 70,000 out-of-town visitors are expected to descend on the Alamo City should the NCAA award the event to San Antonio. The expected economic impact would exceed $70 million.

These tremendous opportunities would not be possible without all of the key players in the process diligently working to put San Antonio in a position to be successful. Thanks to Derrick Fox, Lynn Hickey, Ed Belmares, Mike Sawaya and Nick Langella for their efforts to put San Antonio in contention for these events.

Valor Games Southwest Inspire
The transformational power of sport was on display when San Antonio Sports hosted the Valor Games Southwest, presented by Valero, along with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and U.S. Paralympics.Jose Ibarra was typical of many of the 90 veterans or active-duty military from most every branch of service who took part in the games. After being injured, he closed himself off, locking himself within the four walls of his mind and his house. A neighbor, who happened to be a Paralympian came by and asked Jose to try riding a special hand cycle. Just one time. Around the block. Reluctantly, Jose agreed and has never looked back. Now in addition to cycling regularly, he's tried scuba diving, water skiing and wheelchair basketball. The Valor Games was his first competition and he had a ball.

Darlene Hunter helped run the games. She's a Paralympian in wheelchair basketball and also the North Texas coordinator for Texas Regional Paralympic Sport. She's been in a wheelchair since age 4 and has never let it slow her down. "I'm in a wheelchair and can't walk. What am I going to do? I can't change the way I am and love sports. This is fun. No sitting on the sidelines."

The Valor Games Southwest is designed to be an introductory event to get veterans into sports and this was one of four games held around the nation (other sites were Durham, NC, Chicago and San Jose, CA). San Antonio Sports hopes to make it an annual event. The Valor Games Southwest, presented by Valero, was also sponsored by Time Warner Cable and USAA. To see photos from the games, click here.

Local Divers at UANA Jr. Pan American Diving Championships
San Antonians Christopher Law and Finn Scribbick participated in the 2013 UANA Junior Pan American Diving Championships in Tucson, AZ, which was held Sept. 26-29. The meet featured nine countries and 105 divers. Divers from Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, the United States and Venezuela participated.

Law and Scribbick, competing internationally together for the first time, took bronze in synchro with 281.31 points. "I thought Finn and I did great. We went out there and had a lot of fun. It wasn't necessarily about winning. It was about going out there and showing the world what we can do. For our first time being in international competition diving synchro together, I felt we did great. We're both very proud of how we did and hope we get to come back and do this again (in other international meets)," Law said in an interview with USA Diving.

Law also placed seventh in the Boys 3m (16-18) finals. Congratulations to both!
