Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation recently granted $50,000 to fund the Foster In Texas (FIT) “Lead Volunteer Program.” This is a new initiative to help FIT, a program of Lutheran Social Services of the South (LSS), recruit new foster families and remove geographic and scheduling barriers for families interested in becoming foster parents. There is a shortage of qualified foster homes throughout Texas, including Austin, particularly for infants, sibling groups, and teenagers. The FIT program demands that foster parents are thoroughly vetted on the front-end and capable of meeting the highest standards.
FIT is applying the Thrivent grant funds toward building partnerships with local churches as they identify and guide families through the foster care process, and then training them at their own church campus. A FIT Lead Volunteer is a member of the congregation who is identified as passionate about helping abused and neglected children. The Lead Volunteer will be the point of contact to help organize the training schedule and arrange meetings between church leadership and LSS-FIT staff.
The goal is to grow the number of loving Christian foster homes, verifying groups of families through an outreach to churches. Additionally, we are recruiting qualified respite providers to support the foster families. The families will become their own support network, which has proven to be a vital link to a foster family’s success.
The FIT Lead Volunteer Program is one more way to build relationships in and around the cities where we have offices: Amarillo, Austin, Corpus Christi, El Paso, Fort Worth, Garland, Harlingen, Houston, Laredo, Lubbock, McAllen, Richardson, San Antonio, Tyler, and Victoria. Support from the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation makes this outreach program possible within Lutheran churches across the state.
