"How to Tell Your Story"
The 2013 Nonprofit Technology Summit will take place Friday, September 27, 2013 at Rackspace. With constant upgrades to hardware and software, the ever-changing direction of social media, scarce resources and increasing competition in the nonprofit sector, learning how to communicate effectively and efficiently is critical in achieving your mission. So this year’s theme will center on “How to Tell Your Story.”

Featuring guest speaker Bill Schley
Bill Schley is author of the recent New York Times best-selling book, The UnStoppables: Tapping Your Entrepreneurial Power. He is also an award-winning branding expert, speaker and a life-long entrepreneur. Bill is Co-Founder of the firm Brand Team Six and is known for creating the ‘Dominant Selling Idea’ at some of the world’s most successful companies. He began his career as a writer at the legendary Ted Bates Advertising Agency in New York where he won an Effie Award for sales effective advertising. He has appeared on CNBC’s Street Signs, CNN Money Online, the Hallmark Channel and numerous syndicated radio programs. “How to Visualize Your Story” - Featuring Guest Consultant Duarte
Since 1988, Duarte has created presentations for the world’s most innovative companies, including Adobe, Cisco, Citrix, Electronic Arts, Food Network, HP, Disney, Facebook, Google, Genentech, Kaiser Permanente, SunPower, Humana, Intel, Symantec and Twitter. Duarte also partners with TED and Pop!Tech, and worked with Al Gore to develop the presentation that became the Academy Award winning documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.” Duarte has trained individuals and organizations within the financial, healthcare, pharmaceutical, packaged goods, marketing and advertising, education, high-tech, biotech and nonprofit markets. Kara Gomez is Community Manager at Geekdom, a collaborative co-working space in downtown San Antonio. She helps create Geekdom evangelists from the inside out through community engagement and social media storytelling. In the end, she does whatever it takes to make members feel welcomed and connected. Gomez is also owner and lead photographer of Open Book Studios, a family and portrait photography business.
Kara received her MBA with a concentration in Project Management from The University of Texas at San Antonio in 2011, a BBA in Accounting in 2003, and attended Sam Houston State University on a golf scholarship. She currently serves as an Area Coordinator and on-call volunteer photographer for the Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Foundation, a board member of Youth Orchestras of San Antonio, and is a former foster parent and GED tutor and mentor. Kara and her husband, Lorenzo, live, work and attend church in Downtown San Antonio.
“How to Tell Your Story Though Video” – Carlos Maestas
Carlos Maestas was imported from Sacramento, California at the age of 14. After graduating from Douglas MacArthur High School, he attended The University of Texas in San Antonio and started a company called Key Ideas. Carlos earned an MBA from the University of Incarnate Word and returned to his alma mater as an adjunct professor for two semesters teaching marketing and international business in 2009. Through his work, Carlos discovered a passion for helping nonprofits tell their stories and build awareness of important issues both in San Antonio and around the world.
Key Ideas is passionate for telling great stories in ways that raise awareness and inspire action both in the city and around the world. In fact, the BBC featured a PSA produced by Key Ideas for a client during a documentary about child abuse. This documentary aired in the United States and Canada.
Key Ideas also followed stories as far away as West Africa and Moldova. In Africa, Key Ideas documented the work of a San Antonio nonprofit that assists Liberian communities recovering from two civil wars.
Over the past 11 years, Key Ideas' clients in San Antonio and the surrounding area include San Antonio Food Bank, City Church, Carabin Shaw, The Salvation Army, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and The SAISD Foundation.
