No Revivals. No Dead Authors. No Boundaries.
Theatre Under the Stars

August, 2013

Edgy, captivating, rockin’ and occasionally a bit risqué, Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) is taking what you think you know about musical theatre and turning it upside down and underground. Delivering new musicals to a new generation, the organization is excited to unveil TUTS Underground (www.TUTSUnderground.com), a series of contemporary shows that meet the desires of a modern audience. Simply put, these are not your grandmother’s musicals.

TUTS Underground will immerse Houston audiences in musical theatre experience that are intimate, atmospheric and reasonably price. Tickets to Underground productions range from $24 to $49 and the 2013 – 2014 Season will be comprised of four shows backed by the professionalism and artistry that TUTS is known for.

“TUTS Underground has been a dream of the organization’s for a long time, and we are thrilled to finally make it a reality. Through our strong New York City connections, we are granted unparalleled access to the freshest, most innovative musicals coming out of the Broadway community. As a multi-million dollar musical theatre organization, we have the unique opportunity to take new material from obscurity to notoriety right here in Houston. That is pretty exciting,” said John Breckenridge, TUTS’ CEO and President.

Kicking off the first season TUTS Underground, Houston audiences will experience the aftermath of 40 whacks in the thriller LIZZIE, based on the notoriously acquitted Lizzie Borden. Whacks of a different nature will continue in the comedic spoof 50 SHADES! Texans will appreciate the true test of endurance with HANDS ON A HARDBODY, which chronicles the hard-fought contest to win a brand-new truck. The fourth title is yet to be determined.

“I want to bring important theatre to Houston – shows that make people think and view the world around them differently and from a new and exciting angle. TUTS Underground will showcase just how dynamic musical theatre can be. Houston is ready for this. TUTS is ready for this,” explained Bruce Lumpkin TUTS’ Artistic Director.

Proving TUTS Underground is not just a show but an experience, performances will be held in Zilkha Hall, an intimate 500-seat theatre located in Hobby Center. All senses will be engaged during visits to the theatre with patrons being immersed into the world of the show they are about to see from the moment they arrive and will last beyond the final bows. The evening does not end when the curtain closes. Audiences can relax and relive the Underground experience at a wine and beer garden found right outside the Zilkha doors.

TUTS Underground is a new venture and legacy for TUTS, Houston’s largest nonprofit musical theatre company.
