PRE-REGISTER BY AUGUST 2 FOR TARRANT COUNTY BACK TO SCHOOL ROUNDUP SET FOR WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7, AT WILL ROGERS MEMORIAL CENTER
Tarrant County

July, 2013

Eligible families will once again be required to pre-register by August 2 if they want to attend the Tarrant County Back To School Roundup, presented by Walmart and Sam’s Club. This year’s ninth-annual event is set for Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m., at the Will Rogers Memorial Center’s Amon G. Carter Exhibit Hall (3401 W. Lancaster Ave., Fort Worth, TX 76107). Parking is $5 at the Memorial Center, or free parking is available at Farrington Field located at the corner of University and Lancaster. Free shuttle service between Will Rogers and Farrington Field will be provided. In addition, The T will provide free bus service on August 7 to Roundup participants utilizing the Fort Worth public transportation service. (Pre-registration voucher is required.)

Roundup will provide free school supplies to students pre-kindergarten through 12th grade who meet specific eligibility requirements. In addition, pre-K through 5th grade students will receive a free backpack.  Roundup also will
offer parents and children a wide range of education, health and social services.

Registration events are being held throughout Tarrant County. (See schedule below for remaining locations and times.) For details, call 2-1-1 or visit backtoschoolroundup.org.

According to the 2011 census, 23.8 percent of youth in Tarrant County live in poverty, so there is a real need to help kids and their families prepare for a successful and healthy school year. And after huge turnouts in past years, County leaders are encouraging families to arrive early to pre-registration events because a limited number of vouchers will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Students will benefit from a number of free services at Roundup including immunizations; dental screenings, fluoride applications, toothbrushes and toothpaste; vision screenings; and haircuts. All family members are welcome to take advantage of free health screenings (including blood pressure and glucose checks). Other highlights will include musical entertainment, kids activities, games, interactive demonstrations and more.

An abundance of educational information, in English and Spanish, will be offered at community resource booths focused on literacy, parenting, nutrition, financial literacy, fire safety and social services. Representatives from Tarrant County schools will be on hand to answer questions and distribute materials on reading programs, psychological and social services, and family literacy.

IMPORTANT: Only eligible Tarrant County families who have pre-registered by August 2 will be admitted into Roundup (no walk-ups the day of the event). In order to pre-register, participants must be public school students ages 4-18 who reside in Tarrant County and meet the 2013 Federal Poverty Income guidelines. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE A PHOTO ID, PROOF OF TARRANT COUNTY RESIDENCY AND PROOF OF INCOME SHOWING THE FAMILY FALLS BELOW THE POVERTY LEVEL.

Picture ID includes state driver’s license, state identification card, military identification card, or foreign consulate-issued identification (i.e. Matricula Consular). Tarrant County proof of residency includes May, June, July or August 2013 utility bill (electricity, water, phone or gas) showing applicant name and current address or letter from landlord or apartment management company, on company letterhead, indicating proof of residency during May, June, July or August 2013. Proof of Income may be verified using paycheck stubs from May, June, July or August 2013 or a letter dated in May, June, July or August 2013 on agency or company letterhead from an employer, welfare office, caseworker, or Social Security Administration Office indicating annual income and signed by an agent of the company or agency. Letter must include contact phone number for verification.

Roundup is entirely funded by private donations and in-kind contributions. It is a collaborative effort between Tarrant County and its 20 school districts, its municipalities, public health department, state agencies, nonprofits, corporate sponsors and volunteers.
