The Elements of Poetry

with

MARK WAGENAAR

Winner of the 2012 Felix Pollak Prize in Poetry

Thursdays, June 13-27, July 11 (off for the 4th)

6:30-9:30 PM

The Writer's Garret

10809 Garland Road, Dallas 75218

In this 12-hour course, we will concentrate on those matters of design, structure,
and textual production associated with poetry. We will explore as well as practice
working with a technique or technical issue (e.g., line endings, enjambment, controlling
metaphors, etc.) specific to the creation of poetry. Such practice will occur in
the form of both writing exercises and careful critical reading of model texts.
In the final 2 weeks of the course, we will address issues of both and apply the
insights derived from our discussions in workshop sessions dedicated to writing
produced by members of the class.

"The Elements of Poetry" is designed for all levels: to help novice poets familiairize
themselves with lyrical, narrative, and formal approaches and poetic conventions,
and to give more experienced poets an occasion to study and practice these features
in greater depth. All participating poets will have opportunities in this class
to develop healthy writing habits.

MARK WAGENAAR is the winner of numerous poetry awards, including the Yellowwood
Poetry Prize, the Gary Gildner Award, the Matt Clark Poetry Prize, and the Greg
Grummer Poetry Award. His poems have appeared in such journals as the New England
Review, Subtropics, Southern Review, American Literary Review, Crab Orchard Review,
New Ohio Review, and Antioch Review. He lives in Denton, Texas.

Winner of the 2012 Felix Pollak Prize in Poetry [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001H-sKQ5O0NehK0ywSn1i0LVsoRkHlYloJc132fwtVNGeDGk47gR_3cIxnKi-jxVudOADJg57zh9q7zTpvJaVdd3ojqLqtq-2VmBMTosVGJRnjO2--PXTOC5iuncq-g0D2PZHTgG-JT1k=]
In this debut collection, Mark Wagenaar composes a startling mystical imagism and
sets it to music, using self-portraits to explore differing physical and spiritual
landscapes. He uses a variety of personae-a victim of sex trafficking in Amsterdam,
a fichera dancer, a portrait haunted by Dante, a carillonneur of starlight, an elephant
in pink slippers remembering its beloved-to silhouette the intricacies and frailties
of the body and the world. In a series of "gospels" and "histories"-such as the
poems "The History of Ecstasy" and "Moth Hour Gospel"-he shines a light on the possibilities
of transcendence and transfiguration, weaving together memory and loss with desire
and hope.

"From Real to Imaginary: Distancing Yourself from Yourself"

with

ROBIN UNDERDAHL

Saturday, June 22

1 - 5 PM

The Writer's Garret

10809 Garland Road, Dallas 75218

Flannery O'Connor thought surviving childhood should supply sufficient material
for the writer. Rendering it as well as she does, however, requires more than journaling.
This class will discuss how we can generate ideas for narrative from our own experience
and then achieve perspective so that we can plumb the material for all it's worth.
Some exercises in class.

ROBIN UNDERDAHL's fiction has appeared or is forthcoming in Notre Dame Review, Columbia,
Coachella Review, Dark Sky, Short Story, and other journals. In October, she will
be a Resident Fellow at the Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Minnesota
to work on a novel in progress. Her memoir of place in upstreet was listed among
Notable Essays in the 2011 Best American Essays. Her book The Red McCombs English
& Irish Silver Collection: Every Piece Tells a Story, coauthored with Thomas Sinsteden,
was published in 2010 by the Institute of Texan Cultures at UT San Antonio. She
is currently coauthoring memoirs with Maestro Anshel Brusilow.
