Drama Program Allows Immigrant Youth To Confront Traumatic Past

"I remember being cold. I remember what it feels like to be shut out," says Caleb Winebrenner, quoting the monologue of a student in his drama class. Winebrenner is a volunteer teacher at Casa de Lighthouse, a Southwest Key immigrant youth shelter in Phoenix, Arizona. (Read More)

Cathy Hammonds at her graduation from Mercer University.

Cathy Hammonds, an Executive Assistant at Southwest Key Programs in Georgia, was employee of the year in 2010. A volunteer in her community, her accomplishments include raising a family and recently completing her Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership with a minor in Human Services from Mercer University

Hammonds put her dreams of going to college on hold as she raised a family. A working mom, she knew she needed to be there for her kids, supporting them at school plays, band recitals, and sporting events.

When her youngest child graduated from high school, she decided the time was right to go back to school. “She did it because it’s what she wanted. I don’t think she had anything to prove. She’s not that type of person. She wanted it for herself,” explains Katie Jones, Hammonds’ daughter. (read more)

Christina Cantu, Special Projects Manager to El Presidente at Southwest Key Programs, recently remodeled her guest bathroom through Southwest Key Green Energy & Construction, a social enterprise business operated by Southwest Key Enterprises. "I had other bids but I decided to go with Green Energy because they were affordable and I felt very comfortable talking with them about my needs and limits," explained Cantu.

Formed in 2006, Southwest Key Green Energy & Construction offers affordable contract work to the East Austin community, provides jobs for skilled workers, and generates revenue that funds the mission of Southwest Key. (read more)
