The Board of Directors of Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children has selected Belinda White Pustka, Ph.D. as the next Executive Director of Sunshine Cottage. Dr. Pustka has more than 32 years of experience in public education, including eight years as Superintendent of Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District (SCUCISD) from 2002-2010. Since 2010, Dr. Pustka has been active conducting research, teaching graduate students at the University of Texas, and serving our state as an Education Policy Analyst for District 54 State Representative Jimmie Don Aycock.
Dr. Pustka’s education includes: a Bachelor of Science from Texas Tech University in Audiology and Speech Pathology, an M.Ed. Degree from University of Houston-Victoria, and a Ph.D. in Education Administration from the University of Texas.
She started her career in the classroom teaching special education students prior to gravitating toward school administration. As a school administrator, her impressive credentials include jobs as Superintendent of Shiner Independent School District, Assistant Superintendent for Business Services of Killeen Independent School District, as well as Superintendent of SCUCISD. She is a well known and highly respected leader throughout our community and across the state of Texas.
On top of her excellent experience, she is a very genuine person with strong values and ties to family and community. She cares about making a difference, putting the children first, and will work tirelessly to promote the mission of Sunshine Cottage.
Chief Executive Officer Dr. Jerry Christian, who came to us only five short years ago, and Executive Director Carolyn Walthall, who has been at Sunshine Cottage for more than 25 years, will both retire at the end of this school year. We have made amazing progress under their leadership and look forward to continued success.
Sunshine Cottage is recognized as one of the most modern and comprehensive schools for the deaf in the country. Sunshine Cottage has taught thousands of hearing-impaired children from around the world to listen, talk and become part of the hearing world. We look forward to continuing our legacy of changing deaf children’s lives through listening and spoken language.
