A philanthropist in her will left more than $7 million to the San Antonio Area Foundation to manage in a permanent fund that will make annual grants to local charities, the Area Foundation announced.

The late Mary Jane K. Lewis willed the money to the Area Foundation to manage through the Leon O. Lewis and Mary Jane K. Lewis Charitable Fund, which she established in 1994.  Lewis, who passed away in 2011, was known as an astute investor who lived modestly.

“By including a charitable fund in her estate plans, Mary Jane Lewis guaranteed that the causes she cared about during her life would be still receiving support after her death,” said Cynthia Hamilton, the Area Foundation’s vice president for Development & Donor Services.  “Mrs. Lewis created a lasting legacy that will have an impact on our community for generations to come.”

She instructed the Area Foundation to make annual distributions of fund income “exclusively for charitable purposes.”

In addition to managing the fund, she designated that the Area Foundation will receive 42 percent of the amount that the Lewis Charitable Fund distributes annually.

Other organizations that she selected to receive annual distributions from the Lewis Charitable Fund include: St. Mark’s Episcopal Church’s Endowment Fund and Altar Guild Fund, Salvation Army of San Antonio, Boysville of San Antonio, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Educational Fund (for members of The University of Texas at Austin Chapter), San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries, Morningside Ministries Fellowship Fund and Little Church of La Villita.

The San Antonio Area Foundation, established in 1964, is San Antonio’s community foundation, which makes grants from funds established by individuals, families, businesses or other entities to support charitable causes in our community. The Area Foundation manages more than $220 million in assets and has distributed more than $200 million for scholarships and grants to educate youth, preserve the environment, protect animals, fund research and provide services that enhance the quality of life for people living in and around San Antonio.
