STUDY WITHDAVE PARSONS

2011 POET LAUREATE OF TEXAS

THIS SATURDAY, April 20

10 AM - 12:30 PM

Reading, Teaching,

and Talking About

Poetry

Poetry plays a powerful role

in our lives, whether we want to admit it or not. We think in metaphors and symbols;
we make sense by way of analogy; even common words like  "Skyscraper"

or "Waterlogged" are rooted

in poetic language. And yet, the idea  of reading or discussing

poems frightens some of us more than a Math test or Doctor's visit.

Whether you teach school or college, mentor youth,

write your own poems, or just want to sound erudite

at cocktail parties, there's much to learn about how

to hone your skills to effectively reach others.

Dave Parsons has been teaching

the TEACHING of Poetry

for many years.

AVAILABLE FOR CPE CREDIT!

THIS COURSE NORMALLY COSTS $300 -$500

PER PERSON, but as a favor to The Writer's Garret, our members and special educators

are receiving this course for ONLY $25--

that's more than 80% off what it costs

writers and teachers in the Houston area.

THIS COURSE IS RECOMMENDED

FOR THOSE WISHING TO USE POETRY

AS A TOOL FOR MENTORING.

DAVE PARSONS's volumes of poetry

include Editing Sky, Color of Mourning,

and Feathering Deep. His poem "Historic Houses" was the winner of the French/  American
Legation Poetry Prize, and "Nighthawk" won the 2006 Baskerville Publishers Award
for Poetry. He has read his poetry alongside Ed Hirsch, William Jay Smith, the
late Grace Paley, Richard Howard, Philip Levine, and others. Dave Parson's work
has been included in six anthologies. After moving to Conroe, Texas, Parsons founded
the Greater Conroe Arts Alliance and the Montgomery County Literary Arts Council.
He teaches creative writing, handball, and racquetball at Lone Star College-Montgomery.

The LONG and the SHORT of It:
A Short Story Approach
to Writing (and Finishing)
That Novel

with

PEGGY CHITTENDEN BROWN

Thursdays April 25 - May 9, 6-9 PM

10809 Garland Road, Dallas 75218

This 3-evening course is for all levels of  writers  who might want to write short
stories or might want  to write novels and who may have experience in either, neither,
or  both.

Most creative writing programs emphasize short fiction and  while  it's a better
fit for our fast-paced lives and short  attention   spans, THE REALITY IS that
publishers are still eyeing that next big  novel--today's Moby Dick or Harry Potter!

If you've  been wanting to "make the leap" from short stories to  novels, or are
not  really sure how each of these writing approaches  varies, this course  will
help you better understand the parameters, and  let you in on that  dirty little
secret that "Size really DOES matter."

Before  classes  begin, please watch Elizabeth Gilbert's TED Talk on "Your  Elusive
Creative Genius." Participants should also come with WHAT IF,  available  from
Barnes and Noble for $2.64 used (or rent it $11.42 for 60  days).  You can also
get it from Amazon for $48.00.

PEGGY CHITTENDEN BROWN  [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001Asp3SwMt5G56ScYs3VMvoybg0t54VxVsLyI7QPed7TRkVKOqtxOuUDM3z9mcBr_BKo7b9xw17ap0dDyPExGnvJac8iSeGHF8kMelKIjn5SSiKTgY17baiwHhzyGURa_s]has

She teaches creative writing, English composition, and humanities.  Her  publishing
history has included short stories, poetry, and academic  articles. Her first novel,
Strangler Figs, won the  Readers' Favorite Award from the Association of Independent
Authors. Dr.  Brown has given  writing workshops in Austin, South Padre Island,
Dallas, and Plano. In  each workshop she draws on 23 years of experience  teaching
creative  writing at Collin College.

MONG-LAN RETURNS
for Another Unique & Energetic Workshop
(in Lovely Vitruvian Park)!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sensations:
The Tango of Dance and Poetry
with
MONG-LAN
Saturday, May 4, 2-5 PM
Vitruvian Park Wildlife Observation Deck
This class will explore the sensations of poetry and dance, specifically the tango--sensations
particular to what each discipline gives us, from the deepest core of ourselves.
Through  exercises, both corporal / dance movements and literary, we will discover
what interchanges are possible from both sides of our brains, the left  literary
linear side, and the right side which thinks in movement,  rhythm, shapes, color,
sound and sensations. We  will explore connection in the tango, connection to our
inner self and  connection to the other; what the perception of another adds to
our  work. One of our goals is to generate new interesting works of poetry from
another viewpoint, stance, and understanding.
withJoe Milazzo
Wednesdays, May 8 - June 26, 7-9 PM
The Writer's Garret  -- 10809 Garland Road, Dallas 75218
Over the course of 8 weeks of study, discussion, and writing, we will chart a course
through a present-day literary existence. We will discuss the basics of editing
and publishing, examine current literary marketplaces and trends, and continue to
refine elements of our writing practice.  Finally, we will also experiment hands-on
with many of the ideas and issues raised in class, by conceiving, planning, and
producing a chapbook and by making a public presentation of our own writing.
PREPARE, POLISH & PUBLISH Your Creative NonFiction PROSE
(and Get READY for the Mayborn!)
with
Bill MARVEL & Julianne B. McCULLAGH
3 Saturdays, May 11, May 18, & June 1
12:30-4:30 PM
The Writer's Garret  -- 10809 Garland Road, Dallas 75218
Each year, Garret writers SCORE BIG with awards, publications, and even book contracts
at the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference.  Don't know about the
world-famous Mayborn of UNT?
No problem, just click here [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001Asp3SwMt5G6mQz1dYheEHJdOrp2Lv95h-gPJfDzoBHFqFYdAO__vApyZgeRVGfJH9SYmV6OYG4Uvb7COzIMGYPFGM5mUssBethfGgQiAJv5arjHMTwTG8TJPyTfwe4hOvKWmL5j4qFQ=].
This 3-Saturday workshop (May 11, 18, & June 1) will cover strategies for getting
the most out of the Mayborn Conference experience: ensuring your manuscript content
and final submissions will be of the highest professional and competitive standard,
as well as the dos and don'ts of pitching projects to agents. You will also get
a chance to speak directly with UNT "Writer in Residence" and Conference Director
George Getschow, who will be visiting one of the workshops.
You may come to this course with just an idea for your Mayborn submission, but previously
prepared work wanting to be reviewed on the first day must be submitted prior to
meeting, no later than Monday, May 6. Send those submissions to Gen@writersgarret.org
.
