The Foster Angels of Central Texas Foundation’s third-annual Appreciation Luncheon is scheduled for April 10th, 2013 at 11:30am at the Omni Austin Hotel at Southpark. On this day, we give thanks to Central Texans who dedicate themselves to protecting & caring for foster children. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect and create strong communities to support these children.
In Central Texas alone, there are over 5,000 children in foster care. Ten of these resilient children will be recognized and honored with a special gift—something well-deserved after a childhood full of trauma and abuse. One youth to be honored, Amanda, has ambitions of starting her own dance studio and is already teaching ballet, hip-hop and ballroom dance lessons. She plans on hosting a dance recital for her students later this year. Guests at the luncheon will have the opportunity to hear more of Amanda’s story and hear additional inspiring stories of all the foster children honorees.
“Not only are the foster children themselves forgotten, but many times the advocates for these children are forgotten, too. We would like to not only recognize the children, but also those who serve them every day,” said Ted Oakley, Founder of Foster Angels. The honorees attending the Luncheon are dedicated to ensuring that foster youth are given the tools they need to lead a satisfying and promising adult life. They handle calls and make decisions every day to ensure the safety of these children.
“We urge all Central Texans to join in celebrating and showing support for the many contributions and accomplishments of those who work so diligently to protect the youth of our community,” announced Mayor Lee Leffingwell, on behalf of the City of Austin. Mayor Leffingwell has proclaimed April 10th, 2013, as a Day of recognition for Advocates of Abused and Neglected Children.
Over 450 guests and honorees are expected at the Luncheon on April 10th. Ten special foster children will be formally recognized, honored, and surprised with special gift packages tailored specifically to their individual interests. All attendees will enjoy a gourmet lunch, door prizes, and a special closing presentation in their honor. Kathy Harrison, foster parent to nearly 100 children and recognized author will be the keynote speaker. Carla McDonald, local philanthropist and CEO of Dynabrand Public Relations Firm, will emcee the event. Community guests are invited to attend by sponsoring a table or purchasing individual tickets (contact Liz Wilson at 512-732-2329).
