I can't remember ever actually joining Literacy Connexus . . .

Building a bookcase I've been married to the editor of this newsletter for 28 years. Consequently, I've been connected to Literacy Connexus, by default, for just about as long as she has. It all started with a mission outing during the BGCT Annual Meeting in McAllen, two-and-a-half years ago. Pam felt called to get involved, and has been active ever since. During that time, I've cut wood, drilled, hammered and painted bookcases, and hauled them as far away as Amarillo. I've set up and torn down Literacy Connexus displays, attended presentations, and helped with family reading fairs.

My participation as a Literacy Connexus roadie has allowed me the privilege of seeing firsthand the impact this ministry has on disadvantaged children and their families. It is immediate and long lasting. I've seen the smiles on kids' faces when they discover they get to decorate their own bookcases and take them home. I've seen the loving bond between parent and child strengthened as they sit close, reading a new book together. I've seen children and their parents introduced to Jesus Christ and the life changing--and saving--impact that will have. I've seen the joy of volunteer adults and youth at Books For The Border and Beyond events as they connect with children and parents, and consider for themselves the importance of literacy in all of our lives.

Chuck, Jason, & Jim Moore--three generations of Literacy Connexus supporters

A considerable sacrifice of time and sweat goes into such a hands-on ministry. I know that as Executive Director, Lester logs thousands of miles on the road, building support and making things happen. I know that Pam logs thousands of hours on the computer, helping with the work and getting the word out.  I also know there are hundreds of others in the mix, volunteering as ESL teachers and involving their churches in literacy projects. All of you have my full support and admiration for what you do every day.

For every Literacy Connexus staff member and volunteer, there are family members like me, peripherally involved and rooting you on. Maybe we should just go ahead and join Literacy Connexus.
