NEWS FROM TEXAS STATE: 'Artifacts of Burleson Homestead' exhibitgoes on display
Texas State University

March, 2013

The Center for Archeological Studies (CAS) at Texas State University is displaying an archeological exhibit titled “Artifacts of the Burleson Homestead” at the San Marcos Public Library for the month of March, and can be viewed any time the library is open.

“Artifacts of the Burleson Homestead” is a project undertaken at the request of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) who participate in public outreach and education programs, especially in March, Texas History Month. This year, they are commemorating the contributions of General Edward Burleson.

Judy Tannehill, a member of the DRT, contacted Amy Benton, collections manager of the CAS, asking if they had any Burleson relics. Benton informed her that they had a collection of artifacts recovered from archeological investigations at the Burleson site in 2000. After meeting with Tannehill and showing her the collection, Benton agreed to help set up a display using some of the artifacts at the San Marcos Public Library.

By participating in public outreach projects like this exhibit, I hope to make the information discovered in both academic and compliance archaeology more available and accessible to the public,” Benton said. “In addition to commemorating the contributions of General Edward Burleson, the objective of the exhibit is to help the public interpret the artifacts and the archaeological site they came from. The audience of this display will be able to read some interesting facts about General Edward Burleson, the archaeological investigations and the artifacts in the brochure, and then take it with them as a memento.”

The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Library hours are 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1-6 p.m. Sunday.

For more information, contact Amy E. Benton at ab71@txstate.edu or at (512) 245-2724.
