On March 8 & 9 at the Majestic Theatre, the San Antonio Symphony welcomes violinist Alexandra Da Costa performing a not new violin concerto inspired by a Diego Rivera mural depicting the Detroit auto industry, Michael Daugherty’s Fire and Blood. Winner of many national and international first prizes, Alexandre Da Costa has given over a thousand concerts and recitals throughout North America, Mexico, Europe, United Kingdom and Asia. He has performed in major halls such as Vienna’s Musikverein, Berlin’s Philharmonie, New York's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg’s Musikhalle, Madrid’s National Auditorium, Beijing’s Poly Theater, and played with prestigious orchestras throughout the world.
The second half of the program features orchestral highlights from Wagner’s The Ring. Wagner is universally regarded as a musical innovator, primarily for his thirteen operas. While carefully honing his craft, he conceived of an artistic ideal that would eventually evolve into the four operas that comprise The Ring of the Nibelung. These four magnificent works have inspired and influenced countless composers, writers and artists and were a major influence on J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings. The excerpts from these operas performed on these concerts were specially chosen by Music Director Sebastian Lang-Lessing.
In February 2010, Sebastian Lang-Lessing was appointed music director of the San Antonio Symphony and began his tenure in the 2010–11 season: he is the orchestra’s eighth director in its 73-year history. In 2011 he finished his second season in San Antonio, which included all the Beethoven Symphonies in two months with the orchestra. Lang-Lessing regularly appears on the podiums of the world’s preeminent opera houses, including the Paris Opera, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Opera Colorado, Bordeaux Opera, Washington National Opera, Hamburg State Opera, and in Oslo, and Stockholm. He has a particularly close connection with Cape Town Opera, having conducted many performances in Cape Town and on tour with the company.
