Texas needs Medicaid expansion - end of story
Texans Care for Children

February, 2013

Mobilize Your Community around the Medicaid Expansion

Texans need
MedicaidThis week Governor Perry tried to say Texas won't expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, telling an estimated 1.5 million low-income, uninsured Texans who will have no health coverage without it: "end of story."

But, in reality, things are just beginning. Overwhelming majorities of Texans want our state to accept the Medicaid expansion. Lawmakers have filed bills to make it happen. And activists like you can make sure that those bills become law.

Some of our most important allies are county, city, and local government officials coming out and standing up for Medicaid expansion, along with chambers of commerce, local hospital district officials, and others. You can help these groups sign an official resolution or letter of support in favor of the Medicaid expansion.

Texas Well and Healthy has created a toolkit with all of the information you or your organization will need to reach out to your local representatives, secure their support, and spread the word. It includes:

1.  Steps for reaching out to local leaders

2.  A draft resolution

3.  Talking points for your meeting with elected officials

4.  A county-by-county report by the Center for Public Policy Priorities on how the Medicaid expansion will affect and benefit your area and an explanation on how to understand and use this report

5. A template press release you can customize and use to share news of your success

Please download the toolkit and join the fight for healthy families and communities in Texas!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Laura Brubaker at laura@progresstexas.org.

Tell Your Senators on the Finance Committee this Week: "Expand Medicaid!"

In Texas, more working people go without health care than in any state. Too many children are uninsured. Your elected official needs to hear from you about letting Texans have the health coverage they need.

Members of the Senate Finance Committee are making choices right now that will help decide whether more families here have health insurance. It doesn't cost the state anything now to do so, but it does require leaders in Austin saying "yes" to a Medicaid solution.

You can help make sure more Texas families have a chance to see a doctor. Tell your Senator: "Texas needs the Medicaid expansion."

1. If you don't know who your state senator is, click here to find out who represents you.

2. As senators hold hearings this week, we need calls into their offices. Say: "I'm from your district, and I want you to support Medicaid expansion in Texas!"

Because they are on the Senate Finance Committee, it is especially important that you call if your Senator is on the list below. (Click on the link above for complete contact information for these senators.):

Tommy Williams              Kevin Eltife              Eddie Lucio, Jr.               Royce West

Bob Deuell                      Glenn Hegar             Dan Patrick                    Judith Zaffirini
