There's No Place Like Home
I’m thrilled to return to San Antonio and look forward to leading San Antonio Sports. San Antonio is our home and where Tammy and I raised our children. San Antonio Sports has been a passion of mine since its inception, and serving on the board for many years provided me great insight for its mission. I really believe in the organization, its value to the community, and look forward to working with an established team of professionals to bring marquee amateur athletic events to San Antonio—along with the national and international awareness that comes with those events. But it is parlaying the fruits of our labor to serve the youth of our community that personally provides me with the greatest motivation.

Susan Blackwood established this organization as one of the premier sports commissions in the country and together, we will continue to operate at the highest level. I look forward to meeting everyone and invite you to be a part of our team—as a volunteer, a member, a sponsor or participant.

Executive Director

Saying Goodbye to Ralph Bender
Ralph C. Bender, founder and Chairman Emeritus of San Antonio Sports, passed away Dec. 27 in San Antonio, TX, his adopted home town. Born in Davenport, Iowa on June 3, 1924, Bender had a profound impact on both the physical and sports landscape of San Antonio. He was buried at Ft. Sam Houston with full military honors. His family asked that contributions in his memory be made to two of his favorite charities, San Antonio Sports or Voices for Children. To read more about Bender’s tremendous legacy, click here.

Volunteers of the Year
Rock 'n' Roll Marathon
Once you’re part of our team, it’s often hard to leave. Just ask Paul and Kathy Colliander (pictured left of SAS Director of Volunteers David Blank).

They first volunteered for San Antonio Sports at the U.S. Olympic Festival-‘93 and have been strong supporters ever since. Kathy and Paul Colliander were named San Antonio Sports’ 2012 Leo & Chicky Rose Volunteers of the Year. According to David Blank, volunteer director, volunteers like Kathy and Paul make everyone’s job a little easier. They have done everything from helping with mail outs to working events from the Sports Hall of Fame Tribute to theNCAA DII Women’s Basketball Championship. They are always willing to offer a hand and their time and we can count on them to follow through on their word. Kathy and Paul have been model volunteers for almost 30 years, and we hope to have them with us for many more years.

The Coca-Cola Foundation Awards a $25,000 Grant to Support Fit Family Challenge
San Antonio Sports received a generous $25,000 grant from The Coca-Cola Foundation for its 2013 Fit Family Challenge, with the goal to improve the health and wellness of San Antonio families through routine family-friendly physical activity and nutrition education. Grant funds will support the implementation of 89 fitness and nutrition activities that will be provided to families free-of-charge.

Mayor's Fitness Council Update
This month, San Antonio Sports Associate Executive Director Mary Ullmann Japhet assumes the volunteer role of chairperson for the Mayor’s Fitness Council. Appointed by Mayor Julián Castro, Mary will work with Council members, volunteers and city staff to promote health and fitness initiatives throughout the community.

“It has been energizing to be part of the Mayor’s Fitness Council for the last two years, and I am honored to lead this group of smart, enthusiastic individuals who are dedicated to making San Antonio one of the most fit cities in the nation by 2020.” For more information, visit FitCitySA.com.

I'll Be Watching: A Farewell from Bill Hanson
Bill Hanson It's all about the people. Those you work for, those you work with, and those you work around. In my 28-year association with San Antonio Sports I've been a part of the passion that established the organization and then built it into the nationally-recognized sports commission that it is today. Robert Marbut's initial vision of staging an Olympic Sports Festival; Ralph Bender and Stacey Johnson's efforts on youth programs; George Block's tenacity for better facilities and Bob Coleman's pursuit of the Final Four and bowl game, all exemplify the success that San Antonio and San Antonio Sports has achieved.

Thousands of volunteers have supported this success over the years, and it's been my pleasure to have worked closely with them on the many events and activities that SAS has conducted. My own satisfaction is derived from providing our volunteers with the organizational structure, defined responsibilities and support materials which they need to perform their duties.

Participants and spectators will tell you that most vivid memories of an event come from bad experiences, be they transportation, hotel or game-day problems, and it is those very glitches that SAS works hardest to avoid.

Foremost, however, will be my memories of staff and the efforts Susan Blackwood has made to assemble an effective team of go-getters. The staff of two-three in the early '90s now numbers 16 full and part-time, with others who have come and gone, but all of whom have played a part in the growth of SAS. One important thing for me to impart to staff is “do-itiveness”, the initiative to make things happen. I especially thank Susan for her trust in me (sometimes painfully I'm sure), and for letting me do my job. That, I'll always appreciate. As I move on, I wish our board members and volunteers all the best, and to staff....I'll be watching.
