With Gratitude

I have so many things for which to be thankful at this time of year. At the top of my list is the wonderful staff at San Antonio Sports. I especially appreciate my right hand man, Bill Hanson. Bill is retiring in a few weeks (see story below) and we are so thankful that he has been part of this organization since its inception. We have never had to worry about an event’s logistics and knew that every detail had been tended to. Bill takes care of things quietly and efficiently, from having enough ice to transportation issues, even the emergency response plans. He has a knack for thinking of everything, so we’re not scrambling at the last minute due to lack of planning. Bill, your presence will be missed! Many of you know that Bill has agreed to direct the NCAA Fencing Championships in March and continue to provide oversight for the Bexar County facility audits for the next year or so. We are proud that he will continue to be part of our team.

I am also very grateful for our wonderful board of directors, members and sponsors. Your contributions of time and funding help us make a difference in the lives of children and adults by having healthy kids, places to play and events that impact.

It’s not too late to join our team in 2012. Please consider making a year-end contribution that allows us to continue to transform our community through the power of sport.

Executive Director

San Antonio Hosts Championship Soccer
Christo LawThe weather cooperated as eight teams vied for the national championships in NCAA Division III soccer. This was the fourth consecutive year San Antonio Sports and Trinity University have hosted the championship. Congratulations go to men’s and women’s winners Messiah College Falcons. This was the fourth time that both teams from the Harrisburg, Pa., school won the top prize in the same season.

San Antonio was also the site of the Big 12 Women’s Soccer Championship in November. The Baylor Bears won their first conference championship, beating conference newcomer, TCU 4-1. Baylor advanced to the NCAA tournament. This was the 16th consecutive and final year San Antonio hosted the championship.

Runners Rocked the Streets
Rock 'n' Roll Marathon
The Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon & Half Marathon celebrated its 5-year birthday in style when more than 25,000 entrants from all 50 states and 22 countries took to the city’s downtown streets.

San Antonio resident Jose Munoz emerged victorious in the marathon with a time of 2:27:53. Cross-country coach Elizabeth Eder, a graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio, won the women’s marathon in 3:06:20. Kenya’s Stanley Biwott, who is undefeated in five races this year, arrived in San Antonio through New York City, where he was a favorite to win the ING New York Marathon before it was canceled after Hurricane Sandy devastated the region. He was the first to cross the finish line outside the Alamodome, winning the men’s half marathon in 1:01:09, breaking the previous event record of 1:02:50 set by U.S. Olympian Brian Sell in 2008. Dawn Grunnagle of Dallas was first in the women’s half marathon.

Special thanks go to the 3,000+ volunteers who helped make the event a success. Over the event’s 5-year history, runners have raised nearly $6 million for charity and out of town visitors have pumped millions more into the local economy.
