2012 Thanksgiving Day Meal Delivery - Volunteer Appeal
Meals on Wheels

November, 2012

Meals on Wheels of San Antonio is now enrolling volunteers who can help deliver turkey dinners to homebound seniors on the morning of Thanksgiving.  The program is tasked with recruiting over 1,000 volunteers to deliver approximately 2,000 turkey dinners.

“On Thanksgiving Day, there are thousands of seniors who will spend the day alone without a friend, family member, or even a meal,” explains Christian Senior Services’ CEO, Sharon Baughman.  “Just donating an hour or so on Thanksgiving morning can make all the difference to an elderly neighbor.”

On November 22nd, registered volunteers will pick up the day’s meals at 4306 NW Loop 410 (at Babcock) which is the main offices of the Meals on Wheels program.  Volunteers are asked to provide their own coolers and transportation in order to deliver the meals.  Each volunteer will be assigned a delivery time so they may complete their assigned deliveries by noon, leaving ample time for volunteers to participate in their own family gatherings.  In addition to the turkey dinners, volunteers will also be delivering flowers (sponsored by H-E-B) and small hand-made gifts (created by local Girl Scout Troops) to make the day extra special for our homebound seniors.

“We typically receive an overwhelming response from families, businesses, and civic leaders who wish to participate, so we are encouraging all volunteers to sign-up well in advance,” adds Baughman.

Pre-event registration is required with registration closing by 5:00 PM on Friday, November 16, 2011.  To register as a volunteer, apply online at www.christianseniorservices.org (select the “turkey button” on the homepage) or call Volunteer Services at (210) 735-5115.

About Meals on Wheels of San Antonio

Meals on Wheel of San Antonio, a program of Christian Senior Services, prepares and delivers over 3,600 nutritious meals each weekday to homebound seniors living in Bexar County. With a registered dietitian on staff, our meals are often the primary source of daily nutrition received by our recipients. In addition, daily interaction with volunteers and staff drivers can combat loneliness and provide opportunities for early intervention in life-threatening situations.  Last year, the program provided close to 890,000 meals to senior residents of Bexar County.  To learn more, visit www.christianseniorservices.org.
