Join us as we work in our extensive native plant gardens to prepare them for fall.  Careful maintenance now will help yield fall blooms and lots of butterflies.

Beyond Binoculars: Explorations in Bird Adaptations

Saturday, August 18th

9:00 - 10:30 am

Program with Peggy Spring, Education Coordinator, City of San Antonio Natural Areas. There's a lot to learn about birds beyond using binoculars to identify them.  In this program, we will explore the killdeer's 'egg-cellent' idea, the vulture's marrow scoop, the sparrow's thumb and many more intriguing topics of birds' habits, structure and behavior.  Be prepared to leave with a new way of looking at our avian friends!

Ages 12 and up

Kid's Birding

Saturday, September 8th

9:00 to 11:00 am

 Great program for kids to learn about bird identification and habitat. We'll learn how to use binoculars and take a hike to see which summer residents we can identify!

Fall Gardening Like Never Before! 

Saturday, September 22nd

9 am to 11 am

Charles Bartlett will discuss new vegetables suitable for Fall gardening, new horticultural innovations, & a model set up for rainwater harvesting using a pump controlled by solar panel electricity.  Handouts will be provided along with samples of items to make your gardening easier and more productive. There will also be a walking tour to a demonstration site near the pavilion.

Ever wonder what about the unique plants of South Texas?  What does "Native plant" really mean? How do they benefit wildlife and our local ecosystems? Join Paul Cox, horticulturist, for an exploration of Mitchell Lake and learn more about these fascinating plants.

During the last few years, trees have endured a variety of stresses.  Mark Peterson, currently with SAWS, formerly Regional Community Forester with the Texas Forest Service, will explore ways to ensure a long and happy life for your trees.
