6 Ways Texas Can Get to Work on Health Care Reform

TODAY: Please call Governor Rick Perry  at 1-800-252-9600 and tell him: “I don't want my federal tax dollars to go to other states' hospitals and health systems. Expand Medicaid, so Texans have coverage and our health dollars can come back to Texas where they belong!”

The Affordable Care Act, the nation's health reform law, will benefit millions of Texans, thanks to expanded Medicaid coverage for all adults who live at or near the poverty line. Since the Supreme Court ruling on the health care law last month, some states are planning to violate the law and not expand their Medicaid programs.

Despite that Texas has the highest rate of uninsured in the country and millions of Texans could benefit from this new provision, Gov. Rick Perry this morning announced that he has no intention of participating.

Keep in mind: under health reform, the federal government will cover 100% of the Medicaid growth for the first three years; after that, Texas would never pay more than 10% of the cost to cover the low-income uninsured. This means the federal tax dollars we Texans contribute for Medicaid will either get used for our own hospitals, doctors, patients, and healthy communities--or it will get sent to other states that have the sense to help their own people. It's not too late for Texas to get to work and make the right choice!

Leaving Texans untreated for their illnesses or waiting until it is too late, so that they end up in hospital emergency rooms, is not just wrong: it's expensive.

Texas needs to accept the Medicaid deal! Call Governor Perry  at 1-800-252-9600and tell him “Texans need health care, and we need the Medicaid expansion.”

Call your state legislator to give them the same message. You can find out who represents you at:  http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/

Over the last week, Texas Well and Healthy has offered suggestions for how Texas can get moving on the nation's health law to help more of our people. Here are the 6 ways in 6 days that we've set out:

  1. Apply for $3 million in available funds to reopen the Texas Consumer Health Assistance Program, which answers Texans' questions about their health care benefits and rights.
  2. Follow through on the demands of 1,600 Texans who petitioned for the state to finalize its review of several health care premium rate hikes of 10 percent or greater.
  3. Create a process for getting input into what will be considered essential health benefits before a September 30 deadline.
  4. Spread the news that 1.5 million Texans will be getting rebates from their insurers because of health reform.
  5. Take action to ensure Texans have a competitive health insurance marketplace that works for them.
  6. Accept Medicaid expansion dollars so our health dollars stay in Texas to help our own health economies.

The Texas Well and Healthy campaign is a broad, grassroots coalition working to ensure that every Texan has access to comprehensive and affordable health insurance. It is a collaboration of members of Cover Texas Now and other health care coalitions in the state, and led by the Center for Public Policy Priorities, Children’s Defense Fund- Texas, Engage Texas and Texans Care for Children.
