Dallas' annual homeless count reveals good and bad news

The Dallas Morning News

May 29, 2012

...The 2012 data marked a generally rising number of homeless people with severe mental illness - 1,275 this year, up from 870 in 2009. Ron Stretcher, Dallas County's criminal justice director, said too many homeless people are still being jailed for minor offenses that call for treatment instead. But community mental health resources are falling far behind, he said. In the past 10 years, funding for community mental health services in Dallas County has risen 10 percent, but the demand for services has increased 150 percent, Stretcher said.

Director of Troubled Youth Agency to Retire

The Texas Tribune

May 29, 2012

... She said she hopes the change of leadership doesn't add to the existing turmoil for the incarcerated youth and that the focus remains on sending young people out of state lockups in better condition than when they arrived. Yañez-Correa and other juvenile justice reform advocates, however, oppose efforts to send more youths to adult facilities, where they say education and rehabilitation for young offenders is inferior. The youths, she said, shouldn't be punished for the failed efforts of adults to reform the agency.

Virtual therapy helps Juárez residents

El Paso Inc.

May 29, 2012

... González, 18, is one of 25 patients who recently completed a virtual therapy program similar to the one used by the United States military to treat Iraq war veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. Created by doctors and psychologists from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the pilot project was aimed at filling a void in mental health services for Juárez's shellshocked residents. The city, home to the powerful Juárez cartel and coveted by other criminal syndicates because of its strategic location within the drug trade, has been one of the front lines in President Felipe Calderón's assault on organized crime.

Texas Legislature must address growing crisis in state mental health services

San Antonio Express-News

May 29, 2012

... There is no question that the demand for services will continue to grow, and that we as a state have a responsibility to provide them - for both compassionate reasons and our economic self-interest. When people with mental disabilities are ignored, they may require emergency crisis treatment or end up in the criminal justice system. ...The lack of services and available hospital facilities is evident in our county jails, many of which have become default treatment centers for the mentally ill.

The effects of war on Houston

Houston Chronicle

May 29, 2012

... Regarding mental health 700,000 of our 2,000,000 (that's 35%) Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans may experience symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), with perhaps only half seeking treatment. But it gets worse, on average 5 service members will die from suicide every week, with another member succumbing to the effects of war every 36 hours. ... Much needed services available through Houston's VA hospital include programs that address mental health, employment and homelessness. But we also need to find ways to go upstream, and stop the problem before it becomes a "heavy burden" for our children.

Letters: Helping our vets

Los Angeles Times

May 30, 2012

... There is a regrettable cycle of relapse and homelessness caused by the paradox that although the patient's decision to wander away from his treatment program is clouded by his chronic mental impairment, it is the patient's civil right to do so. ... Until there are legal changes in which long-term health, sobriety and stable housing are valued over the patient's right to return to psychosis or substance dependence, no amount of goodwill, funding, treatment availability and shelter resources will resolve homelessness.

Screening for mental illness? Yes, there's an app for that

USA Today

May 29, 2012

There are numbers to track cholesterol and numbers to assess blood pressure, body temperature and weight. But can a number give an accurate read on your mental health? The medical team behind a screening tool called Whats MyM3 says it can - and it can tell if you're at increased risk for depression, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). WhatsMyM3 (originally My Mood Monitor) can help adults, whether in treatment or not, "monitor their own symptoms and have a view of what's going on" in terms of mood and anxiety, says psychiatrist Steven Daviss of M3 Information, Bethesda, Md. Daviss is chairman of psychiatry at Baltimore Washington Medical Center.
