San Antonio Sports, a nonprofit sports commission, has received a gold recognition from the San Antonio Business Group on Health, in collaboration with the Mayor’s Fitness Council, for its employee wellness program in the small business category.
For almost a year, San Antonio Sports has had a wellness program that includes a monthly incentive for physical activity, educational “lunch & learn” sessions, and fun activities, like using the City’s “Bike Share” program and enjoying a walk at the new Museum Reach portion of the River Walk. Recently, farm fresh produce began being delivered to their offices in the Alamodome as part of the Sustainable Food Center’s “Farm to Work” program.
“We practice what we preach” says Dr. Susan Blackwood, executive director of San Antonio Sports. “Our youth initiatives, including the Dreams for Youth Afterschool Program, Valero Go!Kids Challenge™, and ING Kids Rock powered by San Antonio Sportsmarathon training program emphasize the importance of physical activity and making healthy choices. If we talk the talk, we need to walk the walk.”
In June, San Antonio Sports will host its inaugural Corporate Cup, a day-long friendly competition that encourages employee camaraderie, wellness, and athletic skill. Forty-eight companies in four divisions based on number of employees have entered this event, which is like a field day for adults.
San Antonio Sports was established in 1984 with a mission to transform our community through the power of sport. It does so by attracting and hosting premier sporting events, delivering sports and fitness programs for area children and families and advocating for quality athletic facilities.
