San Antonio resident Dr. Jacques Barzun (born November 30, 1907) is a French-born American historian of ideas and culture. He has written on a wide range of topics, but is perhaps best known as a philosopher of education. His Teacher in America (1945) was a strong influence on post-WWII training of schoolteachers in the United States. Barzun has written and edited more than forty books touching on an unusually broad range of subjects, including Classical music, science, medicine, psychiatry and art. He is one of the all-time authorities on the music of Hector Berlioz. In addition to his well-known writings on culture and philosophy, Dr. Barzun’s interests include detective fiction and baseball. At 84 years of age, he began writing From Dawn to Decadence: 500 Years of Western Cultural Life, 1500 to the Present. Historians, literary critics, and popular reviewers all lauded it as a sweeping and powerful survey of modern Western history, and it became a New York Times bestseller. In 2003, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush and on March 2, 2011, Barzun was awarded the 2010 National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama.

The concert will include a brief presentation about the life of Dr. Barzun, written by Michael Nye. The symphonic music, all by Berlioz, will be:
