A tiger-like approach to parenting: The key to raising successful children?

Texas A&M University

April 3, 2012

...Jeffrey Liew, an associate professor of learning sciences in the Department of Educational Psychology at Texas A&M, says it is important to refer to the large body of research on child and human development that indicates harsh and psychologically controlling parenting is consistently associated with a host of negative developmental consequences. ...Liew, however, believes that a parenting style like that of the "Tiger Mom," may be one way to develop high achieving children, but that success comes at a significant cost, including the social-emotional well being and mental health of the child. ...The team's research is funded by a grant from the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health.

Gov. Perry Talks Tough on the Budget in Houston

Texas Observer

April 16, 2012

Gov. Rick Perry was in Houston today to unveil his Texas Budget Compact, five fiscal tenets that he hopes will influence the coming primary season and carry over into next year's legislative session. ...Perry suggested being less careful with Medicaid recipients. "The cost of Medicaid is a ticking time bomb," Perry said, adding that "this process will accelerate if the Supreme Court doesn't find Obamacare unconstitutional." Hauntingly, he called for Washington to allow Texas to "take care of our citizens as we see fit," by distributing Medicaid funds to the state in block grants.

Giving More Support to Support-Group Leaders

Wall Street Journal

April 16, 2012

...Organizations training support-group leaders include WomenHeart, the American Brain Tumor Association and the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Groups offer such programs at national conferences and through state and local chapters. They are usually free to participants and often have partnerships with health-care providers and community groups. Many provide guidelines for discussion topics and offer expert speakers. But they expect group leaders to manage the many personality types that may show up and to keep discussions on course.

HEALTHCARE REFORM

Consumers make some gains in out-of-network care, but the price is still high

Washington Post

April 16, 2012

Financially, it's always been risky to get health care from a hospital or doctor that's outside your health plan's network. Without the protection of guaranteed rates negotiated by your health plan, you may end up owing much more, including any billed amounts not paid by your plan. Out-of-network cost sharing is usually higher, too. Some recent developments put consumers in a slightly stronger position if they go out of network: A new database lets consumers learn the prevailing rates for medical procedures in their area, and the 2010 health-care overhaul provides better protection when people receive out-of-network emergency care.

Will digital medical records improve care coordination?

Dallas Morning News

April 16, 2012

A digital information exchange allowing authorized doctors in North Texas to see a patient's medical history will soon become a reality. There is plenty of skepticism, however, about whether it will work to lower the cost of care. ... Authorized access to a patient's medical history should be a valuable tool for improving safety and value. It can eliminate duplicate tests, prescription errors, even operations where surgeons work on the wrong part of the patient's body. ... The partnership's hope is that the North Texas system will induce a lot more coordination.
