Badgerdog Literary Publishing will present Philip and Donna Berber, local philanthropists and founders of A Glimmer of Hope Foundation, with the second annual Forrest Preece Literary Light Award at “Celebrating Voices in Ink.” The event will be held from 6:30-9:00 p.m. on May 3, 2012 at the Kodosky Donor Lounge in theLongCenter. Award-winning Harvard writer Bret Anthony Johnston will read from his work alongside a couple of talented Austin writers to honor the Berbers. Humorist and writer Mary Gordon Spence will emcee.
Each year, this award honors a champion of literary arts in Austin who supports Badgerdog’s mission of giving all individuals a voice, creating literary communities, and making literary art of the highest caliber available to diverse audiences.
The Berbers’ legacy of giving extends around the globe. From helping the rural poor inEthiopia to improving the lives of inner-city residents in London and Austin, they have invested philanthropically to create vital change in underserved communities. In the process, the Berbers have changed the lives of hundreds of individuals. Their foundation A Glimmer of Hope was listed at #7 on Barron's “The 25 Best Givers,” identifying nonprofits with the most impact. TheNew York Times TMagazine blog has called them “pioneers of philanthro-capitalism,” changing how donors become involved in the long-term health and success of the work they support.
A celebration of creativity and discovery, Badgerdog’s event will feature poems written on demand for guests, a unique silent auction, and musical entertainment from Liz Morphis and Chorus Austin with Rabbi Neil Blumofe.
