The Lawndale Artist Studio Program is part of Lawndale's ongoing commitment to support the creation of contemporary art by Gulf Coast area artists. With an emphasis on emerging practices, the programwill provide three artists with studio space on the third floor of Lawndale Art Center at 4912 Main Street in the heart of Houston's Museum District.
Artists have full access to their studios 24 hours a day, seven days a week; access to visiting artists, writers and curators; and will receive a $500 monthly stipend for the duration of the program together with an initial $1500 materials budget. If accepted, artists are expected to present a workshop or presentation to the general public and the local arts community to share their practice or explore a related topic.
Works produced during the 2012-2013 program will be exhibited at Lawndale Art Center in May 2013.Lawndale Art Center will work with resident artists to create additional exhibition opportunities during the residency.
The term of the studio residency program will be nine months beginning September 1, 2012 and ending May 31, 2013. Residents are expected to work a minimum of 16 hours each week in their studios.
Artists working in all media are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be 18 years or older and not enrolled in any degree program. The residency is open to all artists, with an emphasis on artists from the Gulf Coast region. Lawndale welcomes applications from artists in all stages of their careers. Former residents, Lawndale staff, current members of the Lawndale Board of Directors and those who have served in the past year, as well as artists currently scheduled to exhibit at Lawndale are not eligible to apply.
A non-refundable application fee of $20 is due with the application and is payable by check or money order.
Successful applicants will be notified no later than July 15, 2012.
Each studio program applicant shall submit an application form, together with a $20 application fee and a CD labeled with the artist's name, containing the following:
1. One page statement of intent to include:
A. Description of how the residency will benefit you and your work
B. Description of prospective public skills workshop or presentation
2. Curriculum Vitae (C.V.)
3. Image List (if applicable) indicating title of work, year completed, dimensions and medium.
4. 6 DIGITAL IMAGES ordered in viewing priority. Image files must be in jpeg (*.jpg) format, no larger than 2048 x 1536 pixels at 72 dpi. Please submit only images and not Powerpoint presentations, Adobe slideshows or other additional software. For video, send no more than ten minutes of video on DVD or CD able to be played using Windows Media Player, QuickTime or a home DVD player.
All written material should be submitted digitally as Microsoft Word (*.doc) or Adobe PDF (*.pdf) documents and should be readable using Microsoft Windows XP or earlier software. All materials must be in digital formats to ensure review by the Juror Panel.
Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope for return of materials is optional. If not included, materials will be discarded after review.
DEADLINEAll materials and $20 application fee should be submitted to Lawndale Art Center either by mail or hand delivered no later than May 25, 2012 at 5 PM (this is not a postmark deadline).

REVIEW PROCESSThe three residents will be selected by a three-person panel of arts professionals. The selection will be based on the quality of submitted work samples, statement of intent and references.

This workshop will introduce the Lawndale Artist Studio Program to prospective applicants, including a short presentation about the program and application guidelines. The workshop is optional for program applicants.
