Philanthropy works best when there is a candid and respectful relationship between donor and recipient. To that end, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation has expanded the ways those who receive its grants can express themselves to the Foundation.
A new addition to the Foundation’s website gathers in one place several tools from which grant recipients can choose to tell the Foundation about any aspect of the grant-making process. This web page can be reached

Of course, grantees are encouraged to speak directly to Foundation staff about their ideas and concerns, but grantees have several other choices as well. One way to provide feedback is to email the Foundation at granteefeedback@hewlett.org.
In addition, the Foundation has engaged the services of an independent third party, EthicsPoint, Inc., which offers grantees the means to make secure and confidential comments about their relationship with the Foundation. A link to the EthicsPoint site can be found at the Foundation web page listed above. Comments to EthicsPoint are relayed to the Foundation while preserving the commenters’ anonymity.
The new tools build on the Hewlett Foundation’s longstanding commitment to understanding the perspective of its grant recipients. Since 2003, the Foundation has periodically commissioned the Center for Effective Philanthropy to survey its grantees to gain a sense of how they perceive the Foundation as serving their needs.
