Friends of Big Bend National Park was pleased to host 35 volunteers at last week’s National Public Lands Day work project. The Friends participated in two different projects. The first was a land restoration project involving prepping land, spreading native grass seed and mulching in the Tornillo Creek area. The second was assisting in archiving for the library. This is the third year that the Friends have hosted a work project in celebration of National Public Lands Day, and this year’s event was sponsored by Culligan Southwest, Forever Resorts, Guzzi Pizza and Saint Arnold Brewery.
Friends of Big Bend National Park also announces the addition of six new board members, approved at the September 23, 2011 board meeting. They are Matthew Bell of San Antonio, Ann Kovich of Fort Worth, Don Lewis of Waco, Susan Madere of Austin, Paul Nugent of Houston, Dixie Watkins of San Antonio. These new board members will work hand in hand with Friends of Big Bend staff and park service staff on the $375,000 Paleontology Exhibit Campaign that is currently underway.
In addition to allocating funds and electing new board members, the Friends of Big Bend National Park held officer elections. Greg Brazaitis of Houston was elected President, Dennis Kearns of Austin was elected Vice President of Development, Tex Toler of Marfa was elected Vice President of Communications, Chris Thompson of Midland was elected Vice President of Membership, Jan Redford of Houston was elected Secretary and Richard Sawey of Fort Worth was elected Treasurer.
Friends of Big Bend National Park is a non-profit organization whose mission is to support, promote
and raise funds for Big Bend National Park and the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River in partnership with the National Park Service and other supporters who value the unique qualities of this national resource along the Rio Grande.
