July, 2011McConnell & Jones LLP (MJ), Government and Non Profit Sector Leader, Jonathan Ellis, has joined the Dionysus Theatre as a board member for a term of three years.
Once a theatre major, who studied voice, dance, and theatre, Ellis is fulfilling his passion for the arts and working with those with disabilities. “Having a background in theatre, I am willing to help out behind the scenes with production issues and to just dig in and add some physical labor wherever it is needed,” he says. Ellis strongly feels that creative arts have the ability to heal and provide therapies that complement those offered by traditional medicine.
MJ is committed to giving back to the community in which it lives, and share their passion for philanthropy and serving others. Each of the partners in the organization performs more than 1,000 hours each year to the nonprofit community. This initiative was started in 1986 as part of the firm’s social responsibility initiative. Managing Partner, Ira Wayne McConnell says, “We have a responsibility to actively give back our time and expertise in the spaces that we play in.” Since being in Houston for over a decade, McConnell has been involved in several community service initiatives and has instilled the activity throughout the firm.
One of Ellis’s many goals for the organization is to get the word out in the community about the mission and purpose of the theatre. He plans on assisting the theatre with fundraising efforts to bring more revenue into the organization while receiving exposure. “I want to add structure to how the organization is managing their fundraising efforts,” he says. According to Ellis, his expertise in accounting for Government and Non Profit clients will be of great value to the theatre in assuring that accounting practices are correctly in place for fundraising efforts.

About Dionysus Theatre
The Dionysus Theatre mission is to entertain, educate, enlighten and empower actors with disabilities through the theatre experience. It is a catalyst in breaking down barriers, changing lives and attitudes towards those with disabilities. Dionysus Theatre was created in 1997 by Deborah Nowinski, in memory of her son, Dustin, to provide an opportunity for actors, regardless of disability or disadvantage, to share a comprehensive theatre experience. Since 1997, the theatre has grown from six actors and one show to four main stage shows a year, theatre classes for people with disabilities, a youth theatre that tours to schools performing children's shows, and a touring troupe.
