Demographics & the Economy
- State Fiscal Distress
Updated information from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on the number of food stamp program participants is now available for March 2011. The most recent data on unemployment rates have been added from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for all states and the nation for April 2011.
Updated data from the U.S. Census Bureau on state government tax collections, including tax collections by type and tax collections per capita, are now available for 2010.
- Public Sector Pension Funding
New data on public sector pension funding from the Pew Center on the States have been added for fiscal year (FY) 2009. New data on state and local pension contributions as a percentage of state spending have also been added for 2008 from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
Also new on the site are state-by-state data from the National Center for Veterans Analysis and Statistics on total veterans and veteran medical care expenditures for 2010.
- Occupational Fatalities
The most recent information on occupational fatalities has been added for all states and the nation from the BLS for 2009. Data from 1995 through 2009 are available for trend analysis.
- State Smoking Bans
Updated data on state smoking restrictions for worksites, restaurants, and bars have been added from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for 2010.
Medicaid & CHIP
- Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP)
The latest state-level data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on the federal medical assistance percentage (FMAP) with adjustments under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) have been added for FY2011.
- Medicare Advantage (MA)
Updated data from Kaiser Family Foundation analysis of the CMS MA Landscape Source File on total Medicare Advantage enrollment, MA plan penetration, and average monthly payment rates are now available for 2011. Enrollment data from 1999 through 2011 have been added for trend analysis.

- Hospital Expenses
The latest data from the American Hospital Association (AHA) on hospital expenses per inpatient day and hospital expenses per inpatient day by hospital ownership type are now available for all states and the nation for 2009.
Health Insurance & Managed Care
- High Risk Pools
New data from the National Association of State Comprehensive Health Insurance Plans (NASCHIP) on assessments to fund high risk pools and high risk pool eligibility for Medicare beneficiaries have been added and are available as of December 2009. Also new is information on high risk pool grants from CMS as of FY2010.
- Protections in Small Group and Individual Markets
The latest data from Georgetown University’s Health Policy Institute on protections in the small group and individual market have been added for 2011. Updated topics include guaranteed issue, rate restrictions, and health insurance subsidies in the small group and individual markets. Also updated are data on individual market portability rules and non-group coverage rules for HIPAA eligible individuals.
Providers & Service Use
The latest state-by-state information from the AHA on hospitals has been added for all states and the nation for 2009. Updated topics include total hospitals, admissions per 1,000 population, and emergency room visits per 1,000 population. All data are available for trend analysis from 1999 through 2009.
- Nurse Practitioners
New data on nurse practitioner autonomy, including physician supervision requirements for diagnosis and treatment, have been added for all states for 2010 from the American Journal for Nurse Practitioner’s Pearson Report. Updated information on total nurse practitioners and nurse practitioners per 100,000 population is also available.
2010 data on registered nurses and registered nurses per 100,000 population are available from the BLS.
The most recent data from the BLS on employed physicians by specialty area have been added for all states and the nation for 2010. New topics on professionally active physicians and physicians in patient care per 10,000 population are available for 2008 from the CDC.
- Abortion Policy
New state-by-state information from the Guttmacher Institute on restrictions on health insurance coverage of abortion and ultrasound requirements in abortion procedures has been added for 2011.
- AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP)
Updated data from the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors on the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) are now available for FY2010. Updated topics include ADAP budget by source of funding, total drug expenditures, and total prescriptions filled. Also updated is information on ADAP clients by race/ethnicity, gender, age, income, and insurance status.

- Health Insurance Exchange Establishment Grants
New data on states that have been awarded grants to fund health insurance exchange establishment activities have been added from HealthCare.gov.
- Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP)
Updated information from HealthCare.gov on state-level enrollment in the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan has been added as of April 30, 2011.
- Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Coverage Gap Discounts
New data on the number of Medicare beneficiaries receiving Part D prescription drug discounts in the coverage gap are now available as of April 2011. Information on the average discount per person and the total discount amount has also been added.
- Dual Eligible Demonstration Funding
New data from the Medicare-Medicaid Coordination Office on states that have been selected to receive funding to design new coordinated care systems for dual eligible individuals are now available as of April 2011.
