Great Texas Birding Classic Concludes

The 15th annual Great Texas Birding Classic concluded on April 17th with a wonderful brunch sponsored by The Stark Foundation in Orange. This year 40 teams participated including three weeklong teams, eight sectional teams, two energy saver teams, two human powered teams, 11 Big Sits and 13 kids teams. A whopping 339 bird species were identified during the event! We would like to thank our Jeff Gordon, president of the American Birding Association for serving as our Master of Ceremonies and the Beaumont CVB for being our local community host. Also a big thanks to all sponsors, participants, and support staff. We hope you all had a great time. Next year the Birding Classic will be held April 14-27 and we look forward to seeing everyone at the awards ceremony on the Central Texas Coast.

Birding Classic Auction Raises Funds

Once again our loyal supporters made the Birding Classic Auction a success. This year the Online Auction raised $4,435 for conservation projects along the Texas coast. We would like to thank all donors and bidders for participating and supporting this most valuable effort. Winners have been notified and purchases will be mailed from GCBO as soon as payment is received. If you would like to pick your items up at GCBO, please let us know as soon as possible. Thanks again for supporting conservation along the Texas coast!

GCBO Special Gifts

The GCBO annual budget contains a variety of discrete special projects that could really use a sponsor. Rather than a “general operating” gift you might consider one of these special opportunities.

- Fund 5 days of trips to shell islands for American Oystercatcher

research (gift will be matched 1:1) - $500

- Sponsor travel & lodging for a Mexican partner attending the

upcoming Site Partner Network Conference - $1,000

- Fund a summer intern to support GCBO research and conservation

  activities - $1,500

- Improve our efficiency, provide a new computer and monitor for one

  staff member - $2,000

To sponsor a project or student, please contact Karen Cornelius by phone (979) 480-0999 or email kcornelius@gcbo.org

Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day

Go Wild, Go Birding! is the IMBD 2011 theme, chosen to highlight and focus on reaching out to involve youth and adults in learning about birds, bird watching, and bird conservation. Public awareness and concern are crucial components of migratory bird conservation. Citizens who are enthusiastic about birds, informed about threats, and empowered to become involved in addressing those threats, can make a tremendous contribution to maintaining healthy bird populations. GCBO staff will participate by hosting a station on birds for the Girl Scouts Cool Science Investigation event at Sea Center Texas on May 14.

GCBO Site Closure

Though we never want to discourage your visit to GCBO, we wanted to let you know that for 4 days in May (Monday - Thursday, May16-19) we will close the Lake Jackson Sanctuary for necessary trail and building maintenance. Sorry for any inconvenience but we promise that you will enjoy the improvements when you next come out! Perhaps the following Saturday (May 21) you can join us for Bird Banding and check out our enhancements!

Monthly Bird Banding at GCBO

Join us from 8:00 until noon on Saturday, May 21st for our monthly bird banding session. GCBO Research Associates Robert & Kay Lookingbill will explain the aging and sexing process as they band the birds. Migration will be winding down but our regular breeding birds will be in high plumage. Come out and see what surprises are in store for us. This is a great way to get kids excited about wildlife, but all ages are welcome.  See the map on our webpage for directions.  Note that mapquest and googlemaps will not guide you to the right place using our address.
