Learning Opportunity in McAllen

OneStar Foundation and its partners are offering a strategic no cost opportunity to leaders of nonprofit, faith-based and community organizations in McAllen on Wednesday, May 11, 2011.

The workshop will cover the 33 Principles discussed in the Independent Sector’s Panel on the Nonprofit Sector’s “Principles of Good Governance and Ethical Practice." The 33 principles are organized under four main categories:
  1. Legal Compliance and Public Disclosure: Responsibilities and practices, such as implementing conflict of interest and whistleblower policies, that will assist charitable organizations in complying with their legal obligations and providing information to the public.
  2. Effective Governance: Policies and procedures a board of directors should implement to fulfill its oversight and governance responsibilities effectively.
  3. Strong Financial Oversight: Policies and procedures an organization should follow to ensure wise stewardship of charitable resources.
  4. Responsible Fundraising: Policies and procedures organizations that solicit funds from the public should follow to build donor support and confidence.
Sharon Zambrzycki will lead the all-day session. Seating is limited and registration is required.

AmeriCorps Week

The fifth annual AmeriCorps Week will take place May 14-21, 2011. AmeriCorps Week provides the perfect opportunity for AmeriCorps members, alums, grantees, program partners and friends to demonstrate AmeriCorps' impact on critical issues, bring more Americans into service and thank the community partners who make AmeriCorps possible.

Additionally, AmeriCorps Week shines a spotlight on AmeriCorps' impact in communities across the country in order to motivate more Americans to join AmeriCorps or volunteer in their communities.

OneStar Foundation administers AmeriCorps*Texas, which pairs members with nonprofits, public agencies and faith-based and community organizations to help them tackle social challenges. AmeriCorps*Texas gives members the opportunity to strengthen Texas communities while being part of a national service movement.

New AmeriCorps*Texas Facebook Page

Earlier this month OneStar launched an AmeriCorps*Texas Facebook page. The goal of the AmeriCorps*Texas page is to support AmeriCorps in Texas by creating an online community to promote AmeriCorps activities, members, recruitment efforts and to share ideas and resources. We encourage you to “like” the page and share your AmeriCorps stories and resources.

GEO Invites Foundation Leaders to Take Their Grantmaker Practices Survey

Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO) has created an online survey to collect valuable information from foundation leaders about foundation practices that are connected to nonprofit results. With each study GEO gains new insights, learns about innovations and keeps abreast of trends and shifts in the field.

The survey takes 20 minutes to complete and should be completed by the CEO/ED/President of a US-based, staffed grantmaking organization. The deadline to complete the survey is May 6, 2011.

After completion, any grantmaking organization that participated will be able to access its own data and compare their results with national data. Please note that this survey is entirely confidential and none of the responses will be attributed to a specific organization.

Available Resource Regarding IRS Nonfiler Revocation List

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will soon release the first Nonfiler Revocation List. This list will identify nonprofits whose tax-exempt status has been revoked for failure to file an annual return. These revocations have occurred due to a shift in IRS policy that automatically revokes tax-exempt status for those nonprofits who fail to file their 990 form.

To find out how this will affect your organization we encourage you to utilize an important resource published by GuideStar with information regarding the first wave of nonprofits whose 501(c)(3) status has been revoked by the IRS.

The publication is available for download on this page: http://www2.guidestar.org/rxg/news/publications/revocations-april-2011-report.aspx?hq_e=el&hq_m=1039968&hq_l=2&hq_v=f864edc7f0.
