April, 2011Texas ¾ Rehabilitation counseling professionals across Texas and the United States now have a graduate certification resource at the University of North Texas.
The Department of Rehabilitation, Social Work and Addictions within the College of Public Affairs and Community Service is now offering a post-graduate certificate in Rehabilitation Counseling both online and on campus.
The certification is geared toward professionals already working in the rehabilitation counseling field who have a master’s degree in an area closely related to rehabilitation counseling, such as special education, disability studies, occupational therapy or psychology, and who want to become a certified rehabilitation counselor.
The program was developed in response to a new certification category approved by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification, and UNT’s certification program is the first of its kind in Texas.
The UNT certification program allows individuals to earn education credits and sit for the national exam to become certified rehabilitation counselors, said Linda Holloway, chair of the Department of Rehabilitation, Social Work and Addictions.
Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification is an important professional credential indicating a higher level of qualification, which can lead to career advancement.
“Offering this certification ensures that these professionals have the expertise and educational background to better serve people with disabilities,” Holloway said.
Registration for the online program will be available May 1.
“U.S. News and World Report” ranks UNT’s rehabilitation counseling program as 13th in the nation and first in Texas.
