A REASON TO CELEBRATE AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH
Metrocare

April, 2011

Parents are celebrating the improvements and milestones their children are reaching though ABA Therapy provided by The Center for Children with Autism at Metrocare (CCAM). ABA Therapy (the best-practice therapy for children with Autism) is now more accessible for families because many insurance companies are now covering such treatment. Metrocare is building relationships with over 30 insurance companies to make services more easily available.

Parents, teachers, medical professionals, and others interested in The Center for Children with Autism at Metrocare are invited to visit an Open House on Friday, April 15, 2011, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

According to the CDC, 1 in every 110 children has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The prevalence of Autism increased by an average of 57% from 2002 to 2006. These growing numbers translate to more children, and their parents, needing specialized (and often expensive) therapy.

In the fall of 2008, Metrocare created The Center for Children with Autism (CCAM). Children work one-on-one with therapists on communication, behavior and socialization using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Since opening, 9 out of 10 children who entered the Center non-verbal, left the program being able to communicate their needs and wants.
The program focuses on rst working directly with the child and then training the parents about the functions of their child’s behavior. Parents observe their child’s therapy session while sta narrate.

Eventually parents become part of the therapy session and learn to bring the skills learned into the home or the child’s school.
Mike and Wendy Burlette were shocked at their rst Parent Training session. Watching their daughter “was like watching a dierent child,” they said. “But then it empowered us to do those same things and home, and it worked!” The child who was once non-verbal, now talks her parents’ ears o − and they love it!
