San Antonio Sports Launches 2011 Valero Go!Kids Challenge™ Official Kickoff Wednesday for Citywide Fitness Program Includes Zumba and a Pep Rally

WHAT:           San Antonio Sports’ 2011 Valero Go!Kids Challenge™ will celebrate fitness with hundreds of children, an Olympian, a WNBA All Star, and the Burbank High School drum line, cheerleaders and student athletes.  They’ll be on hand to support the 300 students of Kelly Elementary who will join more than 160,000 other elementary students at 250 schools citywide who pledge to exercise at least 30 minutes a day, six days a week, and make healthy choices to eat and drink.

 

WHERE:         Kelly Elementary, San Antonio ISD

                        1026 Thompson Place (from Hwy. 90, exit Cupples; at Kirk, turn left; At Neimier, go right--past Lowell Middle School; at Thompson, turn right; school is in a cul-de-sac).

 

WHEN:           Wednesday, Feb. 9

                        10 a.m.  Official Kickoff & Press Conference

 

WHO:              More than 300 Kelly Elementary students

                        Josh Davis, Olympic gold medalist

                        Dr. Robert Durón, San Antonio ISD superintendent

Marie Ferdinand-Harris, three-time WNBA All Star

Burbank High School band, cheerleaders and student athletes

Dr. Susan Blackwood, San Antonio Sports executive director

 

VISUALS:       Josh Davis and Marie Ferdinand-Harris, along with Burbank High School’s drum line and cheerleaders will mark the official start with Zumba and a special walk.  The children will join the cheerleaders en masse before the 10 a.m. press conference with Go!Kids mascots Jumping Jack and Active Annie.  After the press conference, students will Zumba and then be joined by the Burbank High School drum line, cheerleaders, and athletes, Davis, Ferdinand-Harris, mascots and other guests as they take their first steps in the 2011 Valero Go!Kids Challenge. 

 

WHY:                    San Antonio Sports created the Valero Go!Kids Challenge to motivate children to make daily physical activity a habit. The eight-week program is designed to educate them about the importance of routine exercise and proper nutrition, and help in the fight against childhood obesity.  Starting good habits early in life will carry through to later years, and the Valero Go!Kids Challenge stresses being fit for life.  This is the eighth year of the program. Valero Go!Kids Challenge participants are serving as fitness role models for one another and their families.
