Art in the Garden: Texas Uprising Selections from the Texas Sculpture Group (TSG) Curated by Lilly Wei
San Antonio Botanical Garden

Celebrating Contemporary Art Month, the 2011 Art in the Garden installation will feature artists from the Texas Sculpture Group (TSG.) The exhibit is co-sponsored by the San AntonioBotanical Garden and BlueStarContemporaryArtCenter, hosting an opening reception on the evening of Friday, March 18.

The show is curated by Lilly Wei who is working with Bill FitzGibbons, President/Executive Director of BlueStarContemporaryArtCenter. Ms.Wei has the daunting task of choosing eight works submitted by TSG to best represent the group’s first showing at the San AntonioBotanical Garden.

The public is invited to meet the artists at an opening reception on Friday, March 18 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the San AntonioBotanical Garden, 555 Funston.

Generous underwriting from the San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs and The Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts helped to make Art in the Garden possible. San AntonioParks and Recreation Department also supports this program.

Curator Lily Wei

Lilly Wei is a New York-based independent curator, essayist and critic who writes for several publications in the United States and abroad. A frequent contributor to Art in America, she is a contributing editor at ARTnews and Art Asia Pacific. She has also been the essayist for many exhibition catalogues and brochures on contemporary art. Wei has served on numerous advisory panels and review committees, including the Pew Fellowship awards and is a member of several boards, including the International Association of Art Critics (AICA/USA), Art in General, and Art Omi, an international artist residency program. She has been a guest lecturer and visiting critic at art institutions nationally and internationally. One of her most recent large-scale curatorial projects was the exhibition The Invisible Thread, Spirit of Buddhism in Contemporary Art at the SnugHarborCulturalCenter, Staten Island, New York which was part of The Buddhist Project, a consortium of exhibitions and programs exploring Buddhist influence in contemporary American culture. She was also a curator of the first International Biennale of Lodz in Poland. Wei has an M.A. in art history from ColumbiaUniversity.

Texas Sculpture Group

The TSG is one of three affiliates operating in cooperation with the International Sculpture Group (ISC.) This gathering of professional sculptors, dealers, curators and collectors formed to promote both public and art-world awareness through exhibitions, a web site, symposia and technical demonstrations.

The Botanical Garden is located at 555 Funston at
North New Braunfels Avenue
and is operated under the auspices of the City of San Antonio Department of Parks & Recreation. The Garden is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. year-round except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
