Texas nonprofits an economic force, study says

Texas nonprofits pack a powerful economic punch.

In 2008, 403,000 nonprofit employees in the state earned $16.8 billion in wages, according to a study by the Austin-based OneStar Foundation and Johns Hopkins University .

That's more than the 2008 payroll for workers in state government ($14.6 billion ), oil and gas extraction ($13.2 billion ) and the real estate and leasing sector ($8.1 billion ).

That year, Texas nonprofit employees paid $1.6 billion in state and local taxes, the OneStar report states.
