You won’t want to miss the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute, presented by AT&T, on Friday, February 18, 2011 in the Alamodome. At this black-tie gala, Priest Holmes, former NFL and UT Longhorn standout, Al Marks, former head swimming coach at Churchill High School, Laura Neugebauer Groff, UT All-American volleyball player, Carl Marvin Gustafson, high school football and basketball coaching legend, and notable Judson High School and Baylor University running back, Jerod Douglas will be inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame. Volunteers Rocked!
To the 4,000 volunteers who spent part of their weekend helping make the 2010 San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and ½ Marathon a success, we thank you. We’re grateful to the 1,700 volunteers who had early hours and long shifts at the expo, start line or finish line; the 1,800 volunteers who were at water stations; and the 600 medical volunteers who made sure all the runners were okay. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Convention will be held in San Antonio December 13-18 at the JW Marriott Hill Country Hotel & Resort. Collegiate and high school coaches from around the nation will be in town for four days of coaching symposiums and meetings. Volunteers are needed for conference breakdown, conference set up, pass gate, registration, and ticket taking. Congratulations to the 2010 NCAA DIII Soccer Champions!
Congratulations to Messiah College’s men’s soccer team, and Hardin-Simmon’s women’s soccer team, the 2010 NCAA DIII champions. The Messiah men completed a three-peat with a victory over Lynchburg. Hardin-Simmons won its school’s very first national title with a victory over Messiah College.

UTSA Roadrunners are Conference Champions
Congratulations to Southland Conference tournament champion, USTA Women’s Volleyball team. Head coach and 2011 San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame inductee Laura Neugebauer Groff led UTSA to a 22-11 overall record and into its second-ever national tournament appearance in program history. The Roadrunners season ended on Friday when they played Groff’s alma mater, No. 9 seed Texas, in Austin and were defeated.

Dr. David Schmidt, Dr. Paul Saenz, both sports medicine physicians and Karen Funk, assistant athletic director at North East ISD shared their time and expertise recently at a Tailgate Talk devoted to youth sports injuries.

Fit Family Challenge Benefits from $5000 Aetna Grant
San Antonio Sports received a $5,000 grant from the Aetna Foundation to support its Fit Family Challenge. Funds helped provide a free family-friendly fitness and nutrition program over a four-month period, with a culminating county-wide celebration at SeaWorld on September 11, 2010.
