5 Reasons to Adopt Older Children

1) You don’t have to change diapers

2) Older children can eat normal food, they don’t need formula or baby food.

3. Older children don’t need car seats

4.  Teenagers can teach you how to use your computer

5.  Teenagers can keep you up-to-date with the latest fashion

Did you know?

There is no fee to adopt from the foster care system! Whether you are working directly with the State or with a private nonprofit agency, it does not matter – none of these agencies will charge you a fee to adopt.

Many of you have probably heard that it costs $25,000 to adopt a child…or something along those lines. That does not apply to adoptions from the foster care system!

Letter from the Executive Director

It is hard to believe the holidays are here and the year is almost over. We’ve had another tremendously successful year at the Adoption Coalition of Texas! Thanks to all who support us!

There are so many people from across the country connected to this organization, it makes me very proud. In 2004, and several years before, this organization was an idea. With $60,000 and the passion to change the futures of abused and neglected children, we set to work. While so many more children now have forever families, our work is not done. As long as there is a child out there waiting, going to sleep every night wondering what the next day will bring, we must continue our effort.

As we enter 2011, we will continue to work hard and make a difference. 2011 will bring some changes to the Adoption Coalition of Texas. Shortly, we will be announcing a new Executive Director (yes, you read that right J ). I am “moving up” to the Board. I am honored to become a board member for the Adoption Coalition of Texas.

Now, I am sure many of you are wondering – “What is Tracy doing? She’s been here forever, how can she leave”?

Before I tell you what I am doing, I want to share my thoughts.

In 2004, I took on the challenge of starting the organization, creating programs to help children in foster care and have been both professionally and personally committed to this cause. For those of you that know me personally, you KNOW this to be true. I believe that every child in foster care deserves a safe, permanent, loving family. It is through this work that my husband and I were able to adopt three teenagers! Not only did we adopt, my sister-in-law adopted a teen boy the Adoption Coalition was working with, and we have an amazing niece in Nebraska that adopted three children from foster care. So, the Eilers family has adopted seven children from foster care! I say that so you will always know how near and dear this cause is to my heart, and to my family. I want to make sure that everyone knows that as we change and transition, the cause remains the same. I want everyone to be as committed, or even more committed, to helping these children. They need ALL of us! I always tell people if you can’t adopt, foster, if you can’t foster, donate! We can’t do this without people and money.

Someone told me the other day about a statement Michael Dell made as he left the position of CEO and became a board member. He said “I’m moving up to the board”. That is exactly what I am doing! As I move “up” to the Board, I am very excited about 2011 and what our new Executive Director will be able to accomplish. (I can’t let you in on that secret yet, we are still working out the details).

So, what will I be doing? I am not leaving foster care by any means. I have been afforded the opportunity to join an organization called Cenpatico, the managed behavioral health care organization under Star Health for children in foster care in the state of Texas. So, I will have the opportunity to work with a great team who is working to improve mental health services to foster children.

Where does this leave the Adoption Coalition of Texas? In the same place, doing wonderful programs, advocating for abused and neglected kids, talking to families from across the country and doing everything possible to make a permanent difference in these children’s lives. I am honored to be the Executive Director of the Adoption Coalition of Texas. I look back over the almost 7 years and am amazed. But I will be equally honored to be on the board. (That just means that I still get to plan events and hit everyone up for money to support this very important cause J )

So, there are no goodbyes with this announcement. I urge everyone to support the Adoption Coalition of Texas, and the new Executive Director – continue making this organization one of the best!

With that, I have favor to ask. Once again, Michael and Susan Dell Foundation has offered us a critical $30,000 challenge grant. That means when we raise $30,000, they will give us $30,000.

I am asking each of you personally to give financially this year, whatever you can give. No amount is too big or too small. It is important that we raise the funds – these funds are used for the Heart Gallery, for Forever Families, for staff who talk to families about children and the adoption process. IF YOU BELIEVE WHAT WE DO IS VALUABLE, OR HAS TOUCHED YOU IN ANY WAY, PLEASE DONATE.

I would LOVE to set a record this year, and meet our goal by the end of the year. It usually takes us many months. Will you help? If 300 people donate $100, we can make it. If 3 people donate $10,000, we can make it. If 3,000 people give $10, we can make it. It all adds up. Without the funds, the children suffer, they will wait longer

If you like the Heart Gallery of Central Texas, donate.

If you like the Meet & Greet Match events, donate.

If you like to call and get information about children, donate.

If you like to call and learn about the process, donate.

If you like Forever Families, donate.

If you believe abused and neglected children deserve forever families, donate.

(I could go on, but I am sure you get the point).

WE NEED YOUR HELP. Please join me in this critical effort.  I will donate, will you?

I hope each and everyone of you have a wonderful holiday season! Enjoy your friends and your families, and remember the children waiting for families.

See you next year!

Happy Holidays!

Secret Santa Update

We have 180 children’s wish lists, and 80 Secret Santa’s. If you can shop for a child between now and the end of next week, please sign up! Email Daphne at – she is coordinating the donor matches with the children.

Our drop off locations will be open December 6-12, so there is still time.

A huge thanks to Daphne for coordinating this, and to Austin Real Estate Partners (her employer and supporters of the Adoption Coalition) for allowing Daphne to spend so much of her December time in helping us. We wouldn’t begin to even try this without her help. Volunteers make a tremendous difference!

Another huge thanks to volunteer Cris Campbell  at Cash Construction and Stacey Reinhart from Roadway Specialties for helping this year! Cris has been a Secret Santa and years past and loves this program. It was her enthusiasm that led us to Stacey!

The Heart Gallery of Central Texas –

The Heart Gallery of Central Texas has been in many places since its unveiling. We were fortunate to have First Evangelical Free Church in Austin host the full gallery for over a month. They even hosted an Orphan Ministry concert and event where families from all over came to learn about adoption. The actual pictures were hung in an absolutely beautiful manner! We are very honored with their involvement.

While the full Heart Gallery ™ was there, the mini-Heart Gallery has made its way to several locations during the month of November.

The full Heart Gallery of Central Texas exhibit will travel to Temple, where it will be at the Temple Cultural Arts Center starting January 14. (check with to confirm dates if you plan to view it).

Another big thanks to all of the photographers, Lisa Reed, and Amy Hadley for all of their efforts in taking this Heart Gallery™ project to the next level. Just wait to see what we have in store for 2011!
