The American Humanics Program at UTSA is a national certification program in nonprofit management and leadership. In 2009-2010 we certified 30 students and professionals in this certification, the most ever for UTSA, and 2nd in the nation! Students participate in the program though coursework and membership in the American Humanics Student Association (AHSA), which is an organization dedicated to providing its members with cultural and social co-curricular opportunities with the intent of enriching the students' professional leadership potential in the field of nonprofit management and leadership in conjunction with American Humanics, Inc. and The University of Texas at San Antonio.

 COMMUNITY SERVICE AND ENGAGEMENT

CPS_newletter_AH_redcrossThis year AH students are on track to increase their service hours exponentially through serving our community and building capacity within nonprofit organizations. Since September 1, 2010 we have contributed a total of 289 hours and worked with a total of 15 nonprofit organizations.

Students learn fundamentals of volunteer management, communication skills, ethics and values, among other competencies while volunteering with area nonprofits.

AH students are preparing for the American Humanics Management Institute - more commonly referred to as AHMI - coming up in January 2011.

Participation in this national conference is required for certification, but also offers professional development through workshops and case studies, as well as excellent networking opportunities with national nonprofit leaders, such as 2010 AHMI speaker, Raul Izaguirre, former President/CEO of National Council of La Raza.

This year 34 students are registered - the most in UTSA's history. AH students are busy fundraising to help offset the costs of their trip and have already raised over $9,500 of their $35,000 goal. Current donors can be found here. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation, please fill out this form and mail it to the Center with your check OR to make a non tax-deductible donation online to help American Humanics Students attend AHMI 2011 please click here.

AH ALUMNI

CPS_newletter_ALUMNIIt's official! AH at UTSA now has an Alumni Group! (Thanks, Crystal!)

AH Alumni that graduated from UTSA are invited to join the AH at UTSA ALUMNI Group on Facebook.  Former AH'ers  can share old AH photos and stories, interesting links/books/articles related to their field, invite each other to networking events, or help each other in their line of work by volunteering, fundraising, or promoting. 2nd ANNUAL AH SHOWCASE

CPS_newletter_showcase Last year American Humanics students highlighted 5 of their Preferred Internship Sites: CASA, Catholic Charities, JDRF, SA Food Bank, and March of Dimes.

Mark your calendars for January 28, 2011 (6:30-9:00pm) for the 2nd Annual AH Showcase this time with a special performance by the AH GLEE Club.

"What is the AH GLEE Club," you ask? AH GLEE Club was formed on a whim and a dream and has finally come to fruition! It consist of AH members both past and present. Currently, they are practicing for their debut performance at the AFP National Philanthropy Day Luncheon on November 16th. Singing is their hobby; nonprofit leadership is their passion!

LOGO_ActionCampOn October 29, 2010, the Center for Policy Studies hosted ActionCamp SA, an "unconference" on social media for nonprofits, where everyone participates & everyone learns. Through the amazing-ness of organizers Colleen Pence (@colleenpence), Debi Pfitzenmaier (@MomonMars), and Fran Stephenson (@fransteps), approximately 100 nonprofit professionals descended upon the UTSA Downtown Campus for a day that people are STILL talking about.

Don't worry, the chance for you to participate in a "Camp" will happen again this Summer for our very first: Nonprofit Summer Camp. We'll keep you posted!
