The next Non-Profit Advocate Communication Training (NPACT) will be held on December 9, 2010 at the offices of United Way Capital Area in Austin.  If you know of anyone who might be interested in this kind of session, please let them know.  We have room for approximately 25 reservations.

NPACT was launched to designed non-profit executive directors, communication and development staff and even board members a personal and intimate but intensive crash course in better communication skills. In short, it was created for people who lead their organization’s communication efforts or are responsible for telling the organization’s story. 

NPACT is a communication boot camp. But it is not a predictable list of “Do’s and Don’ts” of the communication field. It is not a “what to wear on TV training seminar” (anyone can find that on Google).

Instead, NPACT includes in-depth training about strategic communication – not just how to do things, but why we do them, how to align them with an organization’s goals and how to use communication to further an organization’s mission. 

First held in 2009, the NPACT session has helped executive directors and communication directors from human services, environmental, religious and education organizations.

Session Agenda

The training is a combination of instruction and workshop that addresses the following topics.

 

1. Goal, Audience and Message Mapping: Identifying what your organization is trying to accomplish, the audiences who will determine your success or failure, and the messages that hit a responsive chord

2. Messenger Identification and Training: Identifying and nurturing your most effective spokespeople

3. Storytelling as a Communication Strategy: Injecting the most effective communication tactic in human history into your communication efforts

4. Perfecting Your Pitch: Crafting the 30 minute presentation that 90% of your audiences will use to judge your cause.

 

The agenda includes “workshop” and discussion time, so attendees can begin to shape stories about their organizations and revise or revamp presentations and speeches.

Cost: $250 per person. Lunch, snacks and digital materials included. Attendees will receive electronic materials from the day’s agenda, custom planning materials, recommended reading and resource lists.

Colin Rowan founded Rowan Communication, Inc. in 2007, after more than a decade of running communication campaigns for politicians, businesses and the non-profit sector.

 

He joined Environmental Defense Fund in 2002 and directed the organization’s communication work in Texas until 2003, when he moved to Washington, DC to run the national communication office. But it was cold there. Very, very cold. So he returned to the warmer confines of the Austin office where he resumed his work in Texas and also managed EDF’s communication efforts in California and North Carolina.

 

In 2006, he led EDF’s communication campaign against TXU’s proposed coal plants in Texas, which culminated in a landmark environmental agreement between the organization and TXU’s prospective buyers.

 

In the private sector, he led the e-commerce and technology practice at TateAustin Public Relations (now Hahn, Texas) as vice president during the dot-com craze and served as a partner at I&O Communications. And he’s managed the communication strategy for mayoral and congressional campaigns.

 

He has been quoted or has placed stories and OpEds in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal, on PBS, NPR, NBC Nightly News and ABC World News Tonight, as well as most major and mid-market Texas media outlets. He has helped position businesses and non-profits as leaders in their field and has overseen communication campaigns ranging from small, community-focused efforts to million-dollar national launches.

 

Since 2008, he has managed communication for Pecan Street Project, a groundbreaking smart grid initiative in Austin, and was the lead author of the group’s published report of recommendations.

 

Colin’s greatest strengths are designing strategic communication campaigns, crafting messages and preparing organizations and their experts for communication opportunities. He conducts seminars on media training, presentation coaching, message development, marketing for non-profits, storytelling and branding.

 

Clients have included Pecan Street Project, the Cynthia & George Mitchell Foundation, Hill Country Conservancy, Environmental Defense Fund, the League of Conservation Voters (National), The World Resources Institute, the American Association of Public Health Laboratories, the California Housing Association, the Catholic Diocese of America, the American Dental Association, LifeWorks and others.

 

In 2006 he was selected by The Climate Project to train 1,000 citizen activists to present Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” global warming slideshow in their communities. In addition to conducting the training, he presents the slideshow in venues across Central Texas.

 

In addition to his client work, Colin developed Non-Profit Advocate Communication Training (NPACT), a one-day communication workshop for non-profit communication, development and executive staff. The workshop is held approximately twice a year and includes instruction and discussion about messaging, storytelling, presentations and other outreach tactics.
