Studies have shown that people of color and those who speak languages other than English are under-represented in social work and mental health professions in not only in Texas, but everywhere in the United States. As a result, these populations are far less likely to receive effective mental health services that meet their cultural and linguistic needs. ... The Hogg Foundation for Mental Health introduced the Bilingual Scholarship Program in 2008 to increase cultural and linguistic diversity in the Texas mental health workforce.

Spirituality can play a key role in the recovery and healing of individuals who experience mental illness and their loved ones. We will explore how to bring together faith-based communities with mental health professionals, consumers and family members in an effort to strengthen the mind, body and soul of individuals living with mental illness in our community. Rules-Based Medicine first-of-its-kind diagnostic tool hits market

New VA clinic to be built on Bear Lane

CORPUS CHRISTI - A new specialized Veterans Affairs clinic will be built on Bear Lane near the intersection of South Padre Island Drive, a mile from the general VA clinic on Old Brownsville Road, a veterans affairs spokesman said Tuesday.  ...It will provide outpatient treatment for military veterans who have VA benefits. Services include mental health, cardiology, pulmonology, dermatology, endocrinology, urology, ophthalmology, dental, podiatry, physical therapy, prosthetics and orthopedics.

Plea deal is tossed out in fake spy case; Judge brands 40-year sentence as not sufficient for Humble killer

A Liberty County district judge surprised attorneys Tuesday by derailing an agreement for a reduced sentence for Humble resident Jason Rizzi after he had testified how his co-defendant had masqueraded as a secret agent and plotted his own mother's death. ... Scardino said Rizzi was easily manipulated: "As he told the jury, he'd taken almost every kind of drug imaginable since age 13. He was a simple-minded young man with mental problems." Rizzi had also been initially declared incompetent to stand trial until his medication was adjusted.

Conroe PD, DA's Office question PR bond release

The Conroe Police Department and the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office are concerned for the public's safety after a judge ordered a man accused of several first-degree felony charges released on a personal recognizance bond.  ...At the hospital, Crowder was prescribed Seroquel for symptoms of psychosis, Depakote for mood stabilization and Cogentin for management of side effects, according to court documents. A psychiatric evaluation in January noted Crowder admitted to "auditory hallucinations" - hearing voices - in the past, but he told the doctor interviewing him he no longer "hears the voices."

Family criticise report into Daniel Quelch murder

The family of a man stabbed to death by a killer with schizophrenia have criticised the findings of an inquiry into the murder. ... The report into the care he received from an NHS trust concluded Mr Quelch's death "was not preventable". Barbara Quelch, Mr Quelch's mother, told BBC News: "They had made arrangements for [Frankum] to move out of supported housing. In seven weeks they saw him deteriorate so badly that he couldn't even sleep in his room. They ignored the fact that this man was not coping."

Death watch: As soldier suicides increase, Pentagon must intensify its prevention efforts

Two weekends ago, at Texas' Fort Hood, four soldiers, all veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, took their own lives, bringing this year's total at the base to 14 confirmed and six suspected suicides. That figure matches the record high number of suicides in all of 2008 and surpasses last year's total of 11.
