National Volunteer Week is Next Week!
April 18-24, 2010, will be National Volunteer Week—a week dedicated to celebrating volunteers and to recognizing the importance of service. Did you know that nearly 62 million Americans volunteered between September 2007 and September 2008? And here in Texas, 4.1 million Texans volunteered from September 2007 to September 2008. In fact, approximately 23% of all Texans gave about 556.6 million hours of their time toward helping others and strengthening their communities. Volunteers are an essential part of the nonprofit sector, and National Volunteer Week is the perfect opportunity to thank them for their service—and to let others know how much of an impact they can make by giving their time.

Task Force Hearings for Faith-Based and Community Organizational Leaders
The Task Force for Strengthening Nonprofit Capacity will facilitate public hearings throughout Texas to gather recommendations on strengthening the capacity of faith-based and community organizations (FBCOs) providing services to Texans in need. The hearings will address what is working well for FBCOs, what challenges exist for them and what suggestions they have to improve their abilities to service the citizens of Texas. The next hearing will be held as follows:

Social Innovation and bigBANG!
There is a different way to create a positive impact in our communities. Around the world, people are trying new strategies and technologies to tackle some of our toughest challenges. Texas is no exception. On June 10th, 2010, bigBANG! will convene a community of investors, philanthropists, social entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders and others who want to help catalyze positive impact. The day will feature a variety of interactive experiences that will provide attendees with access to like-minded leaders, cutting-edge tools and innovative ideas that will advance mission-based work and socially minded businesses.
bigBANG! will also mark the culmination of the Texas Social Innovation (TSI) Initiative. This event will give the Innovators from the TSI Initiative the opportunity to present their programs’ proven track record, sustainable business model and vision for growth to interested investors.

Chart Your Organization’s Course With CCAT
It’s not too late for your organization to take advantage of a great, comprehensive capacity-building opportunity: the Organizational Assessment Program utilizing the Core Capacity Assessment Tool (CCAT)! Join the growing group of organizations that have utilized the CCAT’s confidential self-assessment to reach new levels of organizational growth.
To find out if your organization is eligible to participate in this program, you can take the eligibility survey here. OneStar will notify you of your eligibility within one week, and can get your organization started with the CCAT shortly after that.
Grantees Announced for Renewing Our Communities Account
OneStar is pleased to announce the 40 recipients of Renewing Our Communities Account (ROCA) nonprofit capacity-building grants.
Through a competitive grant process, OneStar selected 40 small- and medium-sized faith-based and community organizations (FBCOs) to receive grants of up to $25,000 each. The grantees will use these funds to focus on capacity-building activities that strengthen their organizational and collaborative partner capacity, contributing to their long-term sustainability and ability to effectively fulfill their missions.
