On May 3, 2010, the Vannie E. Cook Jr. Cancer Foundation, Inc. is hosting “A Celebration of Heroes” to commemorate 10 years in the fight against childhood cancer in the Rio Grande Valley and to honor our Heroes – the founders, doctors, nurses, donors and especially the many young patients that we serve. The event will be held at the McAllen Country Club at 12:00 noon, with a VIP reception at 11:30 am.
Honorary Chairs for “A Celebration of Heroes” are Dr. and Mrs. Ken Landrum and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Collins. Our guest speaker is David Dewhurst, Texas Lieutenant Governor. He will discuss the states initiatives on cancer related issues. Other individuals on the program include our new Bishop David Flores who will do the invocation, Dr. David Poplack, Director of Texas Children’s CancerCenter and Mr. James Mansour of the Cancer Research and Prevention Institute of Texas (CPRIT). Also, confirmed as special guests are Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., St. Rep. Veronica Gonzales, Mayor Richard Cortez, Mark Wallace, CEO of Texas Children’s Hospital and Marc Shapiro, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Baylor College of Medicine. Mr. Mansour (CPRIT) will present a $950,000 grant to Dr. David Poplack for his Passport for Care web-based program for long-term survivors of childhood cancer. A much smaller grant ($2,800) will be presented to us from CPRIT to help pay for non-reimbursable patient needs.
