Message from the President

Dear Friends,

Treatment and recovery are very difficult. That is why we are proud of those who have faced the challenging and strenuous journey—like Lena Lindsey-Stern, a longtime counselor at Phoenix House in Venice, CA who is celebrating 50 years in recovery.

We are fortunate to have many people who help make our institution work so effectively, as well as great friends who believe in what we do. From Kara DioGuardi taking time from American Idol and her successful songwriting career to give the gift of music to kids in treatment, to Congressman Brad Sherman and our many other partners in government, we at Phoenix House appreciate their support. And we are certainly fortunate to count you among our friends.

With warm wishes,

Howard Meitiner
President and CEO

Star Power
For the past five years, our friend Kara DioGuardi has been on a mission to bring the healing power of music to Phoenix Academy teens. Following the success of the recording studios at our Los Angeles and Yorktown Academies, she will open a third studio in Austin, which is nearing completion. And on April 24, she will sing a few tunes and play in a golf tournament at Golden Hills Golf & Turf Club in Ocala, FL, benefiting our nearby treatment center at Citra. Kara’s presence at the event, hosted by her longtime friend Bernadette Castro, will help raise awareness of the valuable work of our Citra center. We are grateful for Kara’s giving spirit and passion for our cause.

Recovery Across The Regions

New England
:

A Winning Night

With a portion of ticket sales benefiting Phoenix House’s Western Massachusetts programs, more than 3,100 fans turned out to see Springfield’s hometown AHL hockey team, the Falcons, defeat the visiting Bridgeport Sound Tigers 2 to 1 on Friday, February 5. In addition to supporting residential and outpatient treatment for adolescents and adults throughout the region, red-hot action on the ice provided our clients and their families an evening of fun in recovery.

California
:

A Congressional Meeting
Last month, Phoenix Houses of California Director Winnie Wechsler and Pam Dunzer, California board member, visited Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA) on Capitol Hill. Congressman Sherman, whose district includes Lakeview Terrace, where Phoenix Academy of Los Angeles is located, has been a tireless champion of the at-risk youth Phoenix House serves. We thank him, as well as his colleagues in the Los Angeles delegation to Congress—Howard Berman, Jane Harman, Lucille Roybal-Allard, and Grace Napolitano—for their ongoing support of our mission.

Teen Programs Earn CARF Accreditation
Congrats to our adolescent programs in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego Counties for their three-year CARF accreditation. CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) is a nonprofit organization that certifies program adherence to national standards of quality. Receiving accreditation from CARF is an indication of Phoenix Houses of California’s commitment to improving the lives of the teens and families we serve. California is the fourth Phoenix House region to receive certification, after New England, Florida, and Texas.

New York:

Kids and Parents Speak Out

To generate interest and support for our youth programs, Phoenix House’s Youth Services Committee, a small passionate group of volunteers, hosted an event at the home of board member and committee chair Wendy Levey. Five teens and two parents openly shared their stories of addiction and transformation. Ben, now a college sophomore, and his mother Joyce, shared their powerful story, which began with Ben’s drug use at fifteen. They described how they successfully rebuilt their relationship through honest communication.
