Picture Your World Youth Photography Project Contest Deadline: Friday, April 9th

Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas’s youth photography program, Picture Your World, is holding its annual Spring youth photo competition. Children ages 8-18 enter five digital photos that capture the beauty of nature. Subjects of photos can include wildlife, landscapes, people enjoying nature, environmental hotspots, texture and designs in nature and the diversity of nature. Images will be judged based on originality of subject matter, use of light, exposure, framing and composition.

A total of $1,200 in cash prizes will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in the two age group categories: 8-12 years and 13-18 years.

Contestants may submit a CD or email five original images that capture the many aspects of nature in Bexar, Kendall, Comal, Guadalupe, Wilson, Atascosa, Medina and Bandera counties. There is a $10 entry fee.* Mailed entries can be sent to

The Picture Your World contest is associated with a workshop series sponsored by Green Spaces Alliance. At each workshop, a professional photographer and a naturalist help students fully explore their natural environment through a digital camera at sites rich in photographic opportunity. Workshops for 8-12 year olds take place in the morning and 13-18 year olds in the afternoon. Students may borrow digital cameras or bring their own. Cost is $10 per class for the children of Green Spaces members; $15 per class for non-members.* Upcoming workshop dates include February 21st, March 7th, April 11th and April 17th. The workshop on February 21st focuses on thetheme of water while the March 7th workshop focuses on thetheme of air. Participants in the April 11th workshop, which focuses on portfolio preparation, may submit their contest entries to the instructor at the end of class. Please note: Students do not need to attend the workshops in order to enter the contest!

The winners will be announced at a reception and awards presentation held at Valero Corporate Headquarters,

on May 9. All contestants will be notified about the reception. The six 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, along with 24 honorable mention winners, will have their photos displayed at the Valero Headquarters and at various public libraries throughout San Antonio during the summer.

Picture Your World is one of Green Spaces Alliance’s numerous programs promoting community ecological awareness. Through images that reveal the vital connections between earth, water, sky and the living creatures inhabiting these spheres, the student work in this exhibit demonstrates undeniable impact of humans on our environment—including the potential of humans to protect and conserve that environment.  The Picture Your World Project is coordinated for the Green Spaces Alliance by local art educator Sherry Christensen.
