February, 2010

The 10th Annual Empty Bowls fundraiser is set for Sunday, March 21st from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Southwest School of Art & Craft, 300 Augusta. Empty Bowls is a joint venture of the San Antonio Potters Guild and the Southwest School of Art & Craft.

Again this year, the San Antonio River will be transformed into a shoppers’ paradise with more than 2,500 hand-crafted bowls of all shapes and sizes, not to mention bold and fanciful colors. The bowls are displayed on the scenic grounds of the Southwest School of Art & Craft.

For $18 each, guests are invited to select bowls to purchase and then choose from a wide variety of delicious soups donated by some of San Antonio’s trendy restaurants and caterers. The meal, complete with bread and water, is intended to signify the meal of a homeless person. Also, there will be a silent auction featuring items donated by some of the region’s most talented artists.

Over the years the San Antonio Potters Guild has raised more than $168,000 with its Empty Bowls fund raisers to benefit SAMMinistries, one of the largest charities that provides services to the homeless in San Antonio.

This year’s Empty Bowls event has an added attraction to highlight its 10th anniversary. Tycoon Flats, 2926 N. St. Mary’s, is hosting an Empty Bowls 10th Anniversary Party” from 3 p.m. – 10 p.m., also on that Sunday, March 21st, and also to benefit SAMMinistries. Co-owner Richard Hartman will be donating 10% of all net sales for the entire day, and guests will be invited to make their donation to SAMMinistries at the door.

Entertainers for the “Anniversary Party” include Harry Wurzbach and the 410s (classic rock); Bepko, Fletcher, Santos & Rose (acoustic classic rock); The L&Ms (acoustic classic rock); Ron Rose & Friends (roots/Americana), and Jimmy Spacek (rhythm and blues). These bands are playing for free to further support SAMMinistries.
